NLN Pre-Entrance Exam

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has taken the NLN pre-entrance exam for RN? Is it hard? How should I study? I bought the study guide, and I am wondering if it was worth buying?

Thanks

I only had a month to study for it and I bought the guide to study from and believe it or not, used my 14 year old son's algebra and physical science school textbooks to help me study! I studied a couple of hours a day after work. What didn't seem to be covered enough in the book was the physical science. I thought there would be more biology-type questions but there weren't that many compared to the physics/chemistry. I had no pre-reqs at all prior to taking the exam but I have always been an avid reader! I am sorry I can't think of any specific questions. Also, I barely had time to finish the tests before time was up. It seems like you have to go as fast as you possibly can just to finish in the allotted time. One big clue to me that the test was pretty hard is that alot of people were turning in their answer sheets way before time was up. The last part of the test is the science-I think alot of people gave up!-BUT it was alot of "older" people like myself there taking the exam.[i'm 39] I do hope this helps you and lots of luck to you on the test!

Thanks so much for your response! I too have been brushing up on my math skills by helping my daughter with her math, as I hear the math is pretty basic but does need review if you haven't touched math in a while. I'm concerned about the verbal part of it as some of the words in the book I barely recognized! I hear that a lot about the chem and physics! That's what I am investing my time into right now as I have never taken a physics class in my life and haven't taken chem since highschool and that was 11 years ago for me. Did your son's physical science text help you with the physics part? I might just have to head to the library to pick up a text book!

Yes, my son's textbooks helped me more than the study guide because they broke the rules/concepts down into easier to learn chunks than the study guide did. Don't even consider those flashcards because they are very complicated and really don't cover any basics-they just jump right into the really hard stuff and in my opinion I wasted $50! I wasn't worried about the verbal part at all because I read so much but LOL I ended up with the lowest score in that-too funny!

Yeah see, that's my concern too. I have always been good at English but I am afraid of the words they will use on the exam. I read somewhere that someone said only 2 or 3 of the words in the study guide were on her exam! Okay I am definately going to pick up some text books this week!

I am SO stressed about this exam....I am spending a lot of time preparing and I am seriously SO worried about this thing :( I need to pass this now or I don't even get a shot at getting into the program. I am SO worried! :uhoh3:

Jamie-Sue: you aren't alone, I have to take it in 29 days, and Ive been putting a lot of effort into studying and i still don't feel ready. I feel the same way you do. My getting an interview for the school i applied too, is going to weight big time on this test. Interview = apceptance, thats what they said at the open house. I only applied to this one school, i don't know what i will do if i don't get in. Its so bad, ive been litterally having nightmares when I sleep that I failed the test. Ive been trying to keep a positive outlook on it. My mom told me, if I keep telling myself i will fail then i will do just that. You can do it, just don't freak out so much, it just makes things worse.

When do you have to take your test? I take mine on 2/3

I have been having nightmares about the stupid thing too! I literally wake up in the middle of the night talking about physics or math. I am just so exhausted and stressed. You don't realize how much stress can really mess you up :( I want to be done with this stupid exam so I can get on with things and at least start planning my future. One minute I am positive, the next I feel more discouraged then ever.

I take my exam on Jan. 11th. I've been studying for about 2 weeks and wish I would have known how stressful preparing was really going to be. I would have started studying months ago! :(

Man thats just around the corner, before you know it, its going to be over and you'll do great. I had a little more leeway with studying, i spent the majority of my time, studying math since thats my biggest worry. Now im starting on the science part and am sorta freaking out, especially since ive never taken a physics class a day in my life.

I hear you about wanting it to be over, i just want to do it and get my score. That score is going to be the big red flag of if i get in or not. My application is pretty much completed, epcept for one more recomendation letter and the stupid test!

deep breaths jamie, its almost over and you can do it.

I've taken it twice and I still don't think I am getting in. Did better this time, but not sure it was quite high enough to get into the program:o . Which really stinks because I have nothing left to take after the Spring Semester except my Nursing classes. So, just keep trying. To tell you the truth, there is no "real" way to study. Know your equations in Math, fractions, stuff like that. Truthfully, the guide didn't help me all that much for the Science and Language part. Not that it won't help you.

I have been told by a few on this board to STUDY LATIN ROOTS/PREFIX'S/SUFFIX'S! If I don't make it into the Fall Semester and have to try again for the spring, I am going to study the language more than anything because that is what brough my grade down and it makes me mad! :trout: Been speaking English since I was born, so you wouldn't think it would be an issue, but it's not easy by any means!

Good luck to you!!

I know that english section is rather scary to us english speakers--how sad is that?

To someone who had replied to me pages ago--sorry my computer has been kaput--I'm not sure what the cd is called. It's an illegal copy of an illegal copy if you catch my drift. All the cd-rom had was "test taking skills" such as how to make an educated guess and all that jazz. Not very helpful. I take the test on the 27th of this month and am JUST now getting to study thanks to the stomach flu--my whole family has had it. I'm like a lot of you and have to do well because other than nursing classes, I'm finished with all pre-reqs. I wonder if all the tests are the same...I haven't made it yet thru the math review and have not started on the science portion yet. I'm hoping to get in a few good cram days since my mom will be taking my 3 year old to her house for a few days (Shew!). I appreciate everyone's advice as far as the science section and math section....good to know about the latin roots and suffix/prefix section. So far, the vocabulary is kickin my butt. When I heard I had to take this test, reading/vocab. was the least of my fears...now I'm most anxious about it.

Anyway, sorry for such a long time for a reply and thanks for those that have given advice. I guess now all that is left to do is buckle down and STUDY!!!!

Don't waste any money on the flashcards. I bought a set for another test and they were useless.

I have the NLN guide and I also bought the The Allied Health Nursing School and Entrance Exams book last week. It has tons of tests which is what helps me to feel most prepared. It also has more science than the study guide.

I am most worried about the physics as I have never taken that class. Top it off with my school saying I need to be in the 99th percentile and I am petrified. :o

I have to take this test Jan. 18th. Admission to my program is based 60% on the NLN and 40% on GPA. I'm taking my last pre-req (microbiology) this semester. Good luck yall !!! I do have one more opportunity in March if I don't do well, so I'm not nervous(yet). The chemistry-elements and such- looks the most foreign to me in the study guide. I have not seen any of that since pre-1982 in high school. I feel that if we do our best there is NEVER anything to be ashamed of ;).
