My Advice for Getting into Nursing School

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Don't. Seriously. Don't do it. You are probably a nice person. Maybe you have kids and find nurturing a natural way of life. Maybe you were impressed by a nurse who took care of a family member. Maybe since you were five, you dreamed of becoming nurse Barbie. It doesn't matter because the best way to hate nursing is to become a nurse. Preserve that natural instinct to be nice and don't become a nurse.

I started out as a CNA. I liked what the nurses were doing and decided it was the career for me. I had one B and all A's and had my choice of which nursing program I wanted to enroll in.

Then the professors were rude, overbearing, burnt out, and, I truly believe, hated us all in a way. The girls were confused and started cannabalizing each other. The guys, from day one, were completely demasculinated.

You will hate the medical profession. People will sh-- on you, literally and figuratively. You will stress out over hurting someone, since killing someone is a real risk. You will do long, hard hours, and you will be underpaid. Everyone will dump on you because you are at the bottom of the food chain. Google nurse-bullying and seriously consider if you want this to be a part of your daily life.

Probably the mods won't like this post. I don't blame you, but thiss is the truth. I wish someone had told me the truth, and I would have instead become a radiology technician, dental hygienist, or any other comparable profession that pays well without the risks.

Forget the ADN programs. Reputable hospitals have their choice of nurse applicants in this economy, and they don't want two-year nurses. In fact, many new nurses have to wait six months to a year to find their first job. Remember juicy sign on bonuses? Bid them farewell. I have not heard of a sign on bonus in years.

This is the truth, and nursing is a mean, mean profession. I survived and floated, and now I am stuck. I lost a part of my heart and a piece of my soul along the way.

Peace out,

Thanks for sharing your perspective! Nursing is definitely not for everyone, so it's good to hear from people who don't love it for a change.

No offense to you but I feel sorry for you that you seem to hate nursing so much. I hope that you can "unstick" yourself out of it and maybe change careers. I did Administrative work for many years and hated it so I can imagine how you feel.

Whoaa never heard of someone on here hate and say NO to nursing, kind of refreshing and honest....thanks...I truly hope things get better for you, but I'd like to hear more if you dont mind , you got my attention! I want to be prepared for the ugly side of nursing besides the complicared nursing school part...

Actually, I've seen other posts where people have warned about nursing. I can understand someone burning out.

I'll have to search on here about all the negative as well.

Good for you that you figured out nursing isn't for you. I hope you can get out of the profession you hate quickly.

I also agree that your reality isn't every nurse's reality.

im glad you found out that it isnt for you, i find a lot of people in our culture are forced by their parents or convinced that it is the only option to make good money. I always tell people, nursing is not for everyone, please dont work in a field where you are dealing with peoples lives if you cannot maintain your efforts for 12+ hours for the rest of your life. I came from a business background and I LOVE helping people, thats why I tried the nursing field. At the end of the day nursing (medical field) IS a business which also breaks my heart with some of the stuff going on in the 'system' god bless you

Sorry to hear about your situation, OP - and, in a sense you're right. As others have stated - nursing's not a profession for everyone.

However, I had to chuckle a bit about signing bonuses; one of the things I've noticed is the recurrence of...signing bonuses! Over the past 6 months or so, I've seen a number of places (granted, not the gravy institutions) hanging out the ol' signing bonus shingle - and this in fiscally sodomized Southern California. Better than that - had a general staff meeting at my LTC a little over 2 weeks ago; part of the agenda was...signing bounses and referrals.

Far as the rest - well, being verbally emasculated is nothing new to me; playing in the glop is, likewise, nothing new; same with being at the bottom of the social totem pole. Still - when all is said & done, it's far, far better to me than working in IT; because what I do here matters. And, right now, that's what I need.

Having a paycheck (even a little bitty one) isn't too shabby either.
