Career change to Nursing?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone, I thought I'd post and see if anyone could give some helpful advice. I'm an unhappy attorney, and have been thinking about becoming an RN for a few years now. Firstly, I'm 37, is that too old to start working on becoming an RN? Also, the legal market has been a disaster for a while now, is the nursing job market as dire? I would like to clarify that I'm not interested in becoming a nurse because the job market might be better than the legal market, I'm just looking for as much information as possible before I begin my prereqs. I've been volunteering at a local hospital and I absolutely love going, which has further intensified my desire to become a nurse. Thank you everyone!

Oh, and Chemistry wasn't too bad. I definitely had to study, and I used Kahn Academy a lot. That's a great website to check out! My chemistry was a lot of dimensional analysis and I like Math so it didn't bother me. I definitely put in the work to earn my A! lol

That's excellent, good for you! I may just try to take a Chemistry this coming Spring. I'll check out Kahn Academy, thanks for all your advice! I'm not that great at math, so I know if I take Chemistry I'll need to buckle down. Thanks again!

No problem! Like my Algebra teacher told us, Math is the only subject that never changes...you add, subtract, multiply and divide:) good luck!

I was almost 20 years out of engineering school when I went to nursing school, from which I graduated at the sage age of 45. It took about 3 years to land a good job but I finally did and plan to keep at it for another 20 years.

There is an enormous glut of new nurses on the market and the competition for new-grad jobs is fierce. Of course, you bring skills, wisdom, and experience that many of the younger folks would not so the competition isn't quite as stiff as the numbers indicate.

Still, be sure you have your finances in order, that you have cash/credit available to see you through a rough patch of job hunting, and be prepared to move or long-distance commute in order to launch your nursing career.

No course is difficult when you spend time studying and working hard to get that good grade. You tube videos are very useful if you don't understand certain concepts, they can really help a lot. And limiting yourself by social norms, age standards, fears of certain courses is unacceptable :-). Just go for it! For as job market, whoever wants to work will find a job, one way or another. Enjoy life, and do whatever you want to do. Pick a nursing program, see their prereqs and then register for your first two prereqs at any community college. Once you start, there's no coming back :-). I am sure you will do great. Good luck!
