Pre Nursing Student Needs Advice and Encouragement!

Published

Hello everyone! I decided about a month ago to start working towards earning my ADN and I need advice! I am a recent high school graduate (class of 2010) and I spent my first two semesters at city college taking general ed classes to get ready to transfer to a CSU. I took English, Colonial and Modern American History, Political Science, Cultural Anthropology, Pre Calculus, Calculus, and a Psych course. I got all A's except in Pre Calc I got a C! Ugh! I have a cumulative GPA of 3.65 right now because of it :crying2: I was intending to avoid science courses until the last possible moment I could, but obviously with nursing that isn't going to work. I was horrified to find out that even if I were to take Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology all next semester I still would not be able to start a nursing program until SPRING 2013. What this means for me is that it would take me four and a half years to earn a TWO YEAR degree if I got into nursing school on my first try. I am so incredibally embarrassed that it is going to take me that long to get my ADN. I am aslo horrified that the C I got in Pre Calc my first semester at city college is going to hurt my chances of getting into a nursing program the first time around. I am currently attending LBCC (Long Beach City College) and I still need to take Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Statistic, Human Development, Nutrition, a Psych course, a Sociology course, an Art course, and a Speech course. Those all total to 31 more units I need to take on top of the 29 I have already taken. I figured since I will be stuck at city college I might as well get all of these done since most are not required to get into the program but are corequsites or graduation requirements. I am jus really worried that I have already wasted a lot of time towards my degree and really concerned with what my family will think. I am the first person in my family who is actually planning to earn a degree and I am worried they are going to be ****** it is going to take me so long. When the time comes I intend to apply to the nursing programs at LBCC, Cerritos College, Golden West, Cypress, El Camino, Harbor College, and Santa Ana College and I am pretty confident I will get into at least one program on the first try but I am still worried. My career and education goals are to earn my ADN and obtain my RN license, I want to enroll in the RN-BSN program at CSUF so I can work and go to school at the same time, and EVENTUALLY earn my Masters Degree and become a CNM because I want to deliver babies. I think i have a pretty good plan in place but I am just really really really worried about how long it is going to take me to get my ADN. I was really wondering if anyone has felt like this or had this problem or if anyone is willing to share how long it took them to get their degree. Sorry for the wall of text btw:crying2:

I know how you feel. I'm 22 and barely applying to BSN programs. I will be done and graduated with a BSN at 25 hopefully. So don't feel bad. I changed my major too much and that is why I am stuck on the 7 year college plan lol

For your pre cal grade don't worry. I got a C in pre cal too. I am taking stats this year to replace it. No biggie. When you fill out the application for NS, you put down what courses you took and the grade for that category. So the math category you just take calcu

lus or stats and get an A and so there's your A.

The nursing program does not give priority to lb residents. The school its self may but not the SON.

Hang in there. I was just starting anatomy last winter and thought "dang this is going to take forever"

Well guess what? It goes by fast! I did physio and micro in spring and just need chem and stats in the fall. I mean I am already applying this august and Nov! Time goes by fast!

BTW since you are in lb why don't you also apply to CSULA nursing program. They have the same pre reqs as CSULB but you don't need o chem. And intro to psych is a pre req not a co req.

Look into it. And good luck girl!

I was 21 when I started pre-reqs and have only taken two classes a semester since I have 3 kids and wanted to make sure I maintained a 4.0. I remember when I started how far away actually applying to clinicals was and then I ended up taking a whole yr off in the middle of it due to preterm labor during my last pregnancy.

I ended up applying to a better school with a very good friend of mine (yay we get to do clinicals together!) and if it had not taken me this long to finish my pre-reqs we wouldnt have that opportunity togther at a great school.

So I believe you will get to where youre supposed to be when you are meant to. You should enjoy the school experience before clinicals comes and it gets crazy hard lol. I will be a month shy of my 30th (gasp!) bday when I graduate nursing school in May 2014, but I look at it like this: I'll have at least 35-40 yrs to practice nursing when I'm done, decades worth of getting up early and having to go to work, lol, so I am going to try to enjoy the lack of that particular responsibility while I still have it (Im a stay at home mom and have been for the duration of my schooling). Alhtough I did just apply to two hospitals for a CNA position since its been 5 yrs since I worked and I am starting to miss is, but they are part time positions so if it comes to light that I cant cut it, work and school, I can just quit. Good luck, and everything will happen in due time, dont get discouraged!

It's taking me 3 years to transfer as well... I'll be ready by next year. Don't stress out about it!! It's fine, as long as you get the grades. Honestly, I would rather it take me 3 years than take me 2 years if it meant I got the grades I wanted. Plus, it all pays off in the end. Don't stress!

As for that calc course, it's ONE C. Nursing schools won't kill you over it.

Don't focus so much on the amount of time it will take to accomplish your dream. You will have plenty of time to work and pay bills. So focus more on knocking out those prereqs and also consider working towards your BSN instead. I was just like you once, rushing into life....I even changed my major and did something different that would take less time to accomplish...but look at me now...changing careers to do what I wanted to do all along. Good Luck!

you just graduated highschool a year ago, your on the right track, a year or so away really isn't that far. What will you be like 21, 22 when you enter the nursing program??! That is perfectly FINE! I know people who are 28, 45, 50 years old just now going back to school for nursing because they changed their mind on career paths. Atleast you know from the very beginning this is what you want to do & you will get there much sooner than you think :). My Boyfriend's mom is pushing 50 years old, she is enrolled in a LPN class, will graduate in november than start the actual RN part..... you are so young and on the right path, do not get discouraged  You are actually quite fortunate!!!!

Oh, P.S. in the mean time work on becoming a C.N.A ... you'll be able to get lots of work experience before the nursing program starts!! I SO WISH I had done that at the beginning of my pre-reqs! You could even move on up to PCT or something ! If I could go back in time, oh the things I'd do:icon_roll...
