Pre-nursing self study?? Would this help me?

Published

I am taking pre reqs from now until 2009 when I plan on entering an accelerated BSN program. I am only taking 1 class a semester to insure an A in each class. Im taking summers off until 2009.

I purchased a Fundamentals of Nursing textbook from ebay that is a few years old and plan on taking the summer and other off times to read thru it and 'pre learn' some of what I will be learning when I actually get into the nursing program. I just want to get a head start in the textbook knowledge aspect as I will need to work 40 hrs while im in school and wont have hours and hours to study at that time, although I realize I need to work toward that expectation.

I think this will help me start learning nursing concepts, what do you think?

I know that new medical treatments and breakthrus happen constantly, but do the basic nursing concept practices stay basically the same? Or am I wasting my time reading a 5 year old book?

I am just at the prereq stage right now but I think that pre-studying for any class is a good idea. I plan to do that for anatomy before I take it. Well, at least have all the body parts memorized, if not the physiology part! I would suggest you buy a more current book, though. I think five years old seems a bit outdated.

I think it might be kind of bad to take only one class per semester because you'll be doing that for 3 years and then BAM--you'll be hit with a full course load (accelerated!) once you're in the program. That is a big adjustment.

Im just biding my time until my son graduates high school in 3 years and I can send him off to college and concentrate on myself through the excellerated nursing program. No kids or husband in the home and just myself should be easier when working fulltime as well. Many of the pre reqs I already have credit for since I had a bachelors degree so I only have to take 4 or 5 science pre nursing classes.

You may also want to make sure that none of these classes "expire." You are stretching it out over quite a long time.

I took Medical Terminology my first semester in college and it helped out a lot. The other things I wish I knew more of was basic biology concepts, memorization of the muscles and bones and basic body parts. If you have been exposed to those, the physiology part of A&P will come much easier.

You won't waste your time by reading the book to have an understanding of basic practices; however nursing treatments, like those in the medical field, are evolving as more nursing reasearch is being done and disseminated throughout the profession.

Ive already checked that out and I have 5 years to get into the nursing program from taking the prereqs. I should be ready to enter a program by either fall 2008 or spring 2009
