Hello my fellow pre-nursing students and soon to be pre-nursing students. I am a single mom of three children. Twin boys who just turned 7 and a little girl who is soon to be three this week. I have been a stalker of Allnurses for quite some time. I was previously a Veterinary Assistant seeking a degree in Veterinary Technology but decided to change majors since the workload did not pay as much as I needed to support us. Even though I do love animals and love working with them I also enjoy the fact that I could take this infatuation of science and healthcare and become a nurse and support the human society.

I've seen threads on nurse travelers, school acceptance, 30's nurse support, (which is okay and very cool to me) But I haven't seen a thread yet about mom who are trying to transition into the nursing field support thread. It can be hard, but I believe this would be a great place to support each other challenges that affects us daily, such as with time managements skills (w/kids,hubby,etc) daycare, support system, what programs are out there to help us and more other useful stuff that can be used to our advantage. I Really look to and support the single people thread as it's still challenging enough becoming a a nurse even w/o kids; However I know it is super tough for a single mom (even w/hubby, such as his deployment or his long shift to help support the family), but looking through these threads and seeing the replies of other mothers who accomplished it, I say, We Can As Well. Do not give up, I know it is hard, lets come together and keep each other encourage and motivated.

I know you can do it!

Starting with myself: I am 23 years old and will be turning 24 in August.(ADN Route) I already applied to do some of my pre-reqs over again to become competitive. I am focusing on getting into Psy 1101, Math College Algebra and English 1101. I also have to take Humanities, Speech, The first Three Biology, 2113,2114,2117. I am hoping to stilll try my best to make straight A's however as long as I give my best effort that is enough for me.

I Am currently living in Columbus, GA and will be competing for the ADN at Columbus Technical College and plan to transfer to the online ADN-BSN at Columbus State University which cost under 10,000 grand. They also have a partnership so I am guaranteed a spot if I do well..

I hope to hear some you all! :)

Hello my fellow parents im 24 with a 3 and 4 year old and if the lord is willing ill be in somebody bsn program fall 2015.... when things get tough..look at them babies and keep pushing i pray many blessings on each of you

Hi Moms (and Dads!) I am a currently taking my pre-reqs to get into an accelerated BSN program. I have my BA in psychology, and am hoping to start nursing school in Fall 2015. I have two kids ages 5 & 6 and my husband is a perfusionist. I've been staying home and working part time from home for about 4 years now and am excited to go back. I'm a little nervous about the school/home balance when I start the program, though, because I know it will be intense and I really hope DH will be able to pick up the slack at home. Other than that, I'm really excited to get back in the working world as a nurse!

How awesome to have come by this!!! Wanted to share mine as well and pass on some more inspirations and encouragement to all the wonderful selfless mothers out there rocking some form of nursing school! October will be my 29th birthday. (So will next year, lol) But have finally not only update my FAFSA for the 5th time, but follow through and apply, submit, and down payment made towards pre-nursing classes. I felt old myself and wondered, I hope I don't feel upstaged by all these kids coming fresh out of high school. To find out, my select school has only 35-50 nursing students per year and ages range from 21-57 each year. What a relief! Congrats to all you Mommas too!!!!

Hello everyone! I'm 30, going to be 31 in September and I have two kids, 1 and 5 years old. My husband works from 5 pm to 5 am and we have nobody to help us with the kids or the funds for childcare. Luckily our schedules work out but studying is very difficult. I'm 3 mos away from graduating the LVN program and the top student in my class. It's doable! Just take it one day at a time. Hell, one task at a time! I took out student loans to help pay for cost of living and grants have paid for classes. I plan on working for a few years then going the BSN route when my kids are a little older. I already have all the pre-reqs done! If you're dedicated and willing, it will work out! Good luck to everyone!

I am 29 yrs old, married for 6 years and have 3 boys aged 6,4, and 1. I am currently a CMA and am starting the accelerated ADN program in 2 weeks!!! I am very nervous even though I already work in the health field. Anybody with advice will be greatly appreciated!!! Good luck everyone!

Awesome! I think you will be fine, it's look like you already got some medical experience under your belt, which is great!

Update on me: Starting a CNA program next week! And I am so EXCITED! After I get my CNA license in 6 weeks, and get settled in at a job I plan on starting to work my way through my prerequisites. Hoping to apply to in 2016!!!!

Hello everyone, posted on here awhile ago and coming back for some encouragement. I am starting my pre-reqs this fall and I am starting to second guess myself. I am really getting worried about what kind of work load I can handle. I am pretty determined and feel like once it all gets going then I will just make it happen and get the work done. I have four kids the youngest being two. He is the one I'm most concerned with as he is non stop. Anyway, any other mommas out there doing this that can send some encouraging words my way. Thanks!

What is your school load? I started out with 2 classes. When I realized math was a challenge, i went down to one class.

I too am starting from scratch, so I plan to take a G.E. class along with a pre req in order to be on a reasonable schedule. I know when I get to my sciences I don't want any other classes to get in the way of those. So, with those I can do p.e. or just those alone each semester.

Just try to stay focused & remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place. I am a mom with 3 kids. All very active with sports & activies. Thankfully my husband helps! I am also on the board for 2 non - profits. Time management is your best friend. Don't beat yourself up if you make mistakes either. You are human. Best of luck on your journey!

P.s. I love that there's a thread aimed for moms!

Hi, I'm a 37 year old student with 3 kids, 18, 15, 9. I work full time and I'm taking my prerequisites. This is my second semester. I'm taking them part time. I find it challenging but I try to stay motivated and positive to make it through for me and my family.

Hello, I am too going back to school to finish my nursing, started back in 2003, life happened, and now at 30 I just got registered to finish up my pre-req I have left(5, all science and math) and prayfully next year after summer, I can start applying. I have 2 boys, a 10 year old and a 2 year old. I am getting married in October to my biggest supportor, motivator, etc.. Im ready to start my new journey, finishing school, and get into the nursing program.

Specializes in Med Surg/Ortho.

What a great thread! I so needed to read this right now. I am in my last year of prereqs. Actually registered for fall classes just today. I have been a vet tech for 13 years now.(I'm 36) I love it, but am getting burnt out. Very little room for advancement, and the pay sucks. I have been married for 11 years now. We have an 11 year old daughter and 7 year old son. I have taken a class here and there, but didn't want to commit fully when the kids were younger because I knew I didn't have the support to get through school. I took a CNA class in 2010, but didn't work as one for very long. Shortly after, my husband lost his job and started long-haul trucking. With him gone for weeks or months at a time, I couldn't do the schedule and it didn't pay enough (I took a $4 an hour pay cut). So I went back to working as a vet tech.

This semester I am taking A&P 1 and Human Growth and Development. Also taking a History and Poly Sci class that I don't need now but will need to fill my general ed classes when I go for my BSN. Next semester it is A&P 2 and Micro. I hope to apply and get in for Fall 2015 at the local ADN program (then transfer to BSN while working). If not, I will take a few more prereqs and apply for the BSN program straight out.

My dad is retiring and moving to our town, so that will help out with taking care of the kids. I do worry about having to quit my job. I'll have to find something when I am in school, but we will be struggling since I won't make as much. Then my hope is to get a much better paying job that I love, so hubby can quit his and it will be his turn to go back to school!
