Hello my fellow pre-nursing students and soon to be pre-nursing students. I am a single mom of three children. Twin boys who just turned 7 and a little girl who is soon to be three this week. I have been a stalker of Allnurses for quite some time. I was previously a Veterinary Assistant seeking a degree in Veterinary Technology but decided to change majors since the workload did not pay as much as I needed to support us. Even though I do love animals and love working with them I also enjoy the fact that I could take this infatuation of science and healthcare and become a nurse and support the human society.

I've seen threads on nurse travelers, school acceptance, 30's nurse support, (which is okay and very cool to me) But I haven't seen a thread yet about mom who are trying to transition into the nursing field support thread. It can be hard, but I believe this would be a great place to support each other challenges that affects us daily, such as with time managements skills (w/kids,hubby,etc) daycare, support system, what programs are out there to help us and more other useful stuff that can be used to our advantage. I Really look to and support the single people thread as it's still challenging enough becoming a a nurse even w/o kids; However I know it is super tough for a single mom (even w/hubby, such as his deployment or his long shift to help support the family), but looking through these threads and seeing the replies of other mothers who accomplished it, I say, We Can As Well. Do not give up, I know it is hard, lets come together and keep each other encourage and motivated.

I know you can do it!

Starting with myself: I am 23 years old and will be turning 24 in August.(ADN Route) I already applied to do some of my pre-reqs over again to become competitive. I am focusing on getting into Psy 1101, Math College Algebra and English 1101. I also have to take Humanities, Speech, The first Three Biology, 2113,2114,2117. I am hoping to stilll try my best to make straight A's however as long as I give my best effort that is enough for me.

I Am currently living in Columbus, GA and will be competing for the ADN at Columbus Technical College and plan to transfer to the online ADN-BSN at Columbus State University which cost under 10,000 grand. They also have a partnership so I am guaranteed a spot if I do well..

I hope to hear some you all! :)

Hello!

I know you posted this a while back, but i'm pretty new here. I'm 27 and I have 2 munchkins, a 6 year old son and a 3 year old daughter. I've been married for 8 years and my husband and I are both in school, and working full time. We shuffle the kiddos around quite a bit, which I have lots of guilt over but I keep telling myself it's only for a little while longer and it will be worth it in the end. Right now I'm stressing over quitting my 8-5 cubicle job (not sad to leave but need the paycheck!)when my full time program starts in Spring 2015, finding affordable child care (i'm looking into head start since we will have almost no income) & health insurance for all of us while I'm in school. (my husband is a temp at his job so right now he doesn't get benefits). I've been applying like crazy to any odd hours and part time jobs to try to keep during school but so far no luck... Good luck to everyone going through the same struggles. Parenting while in school and working is no joke!

Yes. I have to think the same way. As it is to better us and our situation. Me and my SO have to juggle the kids as well with school and me pulling almost 60 hours each week. I also have been trying to find odd hours jobs here, but u moved from Atlanta to Columbus and there are less conventional jobs here. So I totally agree that parenting and juggling other necessary tasks is hard but not impossible! ??

Hii, Old post. But I'm Jeda, 19 years old with a 7 month old and I am not yet in the nursing program but I am taking the pre requisites. Quite hard with a little baby all over the place but I am just sooo motivated. I am attending Borough of Manhattan Community College in NYC

32 year old single mom of a 9 year old girl. I have finished all my pre reqs and am applying to a few programs for Spring 2015. I will be quitting my full time job at the end of this year and hopefully find a part-time or per diem job to work while I am in nursing school. I am so excited about this new chapter in my life, and even though I will be broke and struggling for the next two years, in the end my daughter and I will be better off because of it. Good Luck to all the mommies!!

Hello everyone, posted on here awhile ago and coming back for some encouragement. I am starting my pre-reqs this fall and I am starting to second guess myself. I am really getting worried about what kind of work load I can handle. I am pretty determined and feel like once it all gets going then I will just make it happen and get the work done. I have four kids the youngest being two. He is the one I'm most concerned with as he is non stop. Anyway, any other mommas out there doing this that can send some encouraging words my way. Thanks!

I know it's tough now, but how old are your other children? Can they help with the two year old, while you study? Is there any head start program there he can attend while your at school or studying. Also a tight schedule and routine with the kids might can helpful. Do you have a SO that can help with the kids? Also if you work a certain amount of hours and under a certain income you might qualify for subsidized childcare in your area.

I have a 12, 11 and 7 year old. They are all very active in sports and I am worried about putting too much on them once school starts for them. My oldest is my daughter and I know she will help when she can. My husband works long hours but I know he will help where he can. He is very supportive thankfully. I am going to look into the head start program in my area. Thanks for the support and kind words. I am grateful to have a place to go and get advice :)

No problem?, I just enrolled my [just turn] 3 year old in headstart and she will start next week!

Hello Im 26 years old with a 3.5 year old and an 8 month old. Im starting my pre-requisites for nursing this fall, application is due Mid-December and I hear back by March to see if I got accepted into the ADN program for next Fall. Its SUPER competitive, something like over 2000 applicants for 200 spots. We live with my mom and both my boyfriend and my mom work night shifts (7p-5a) so the help I will be getting from them will probably be minimal. Im taking 2 online courses Math 101 and some intro to college course as well as A&P with lab, English, and Psych 101 2 days at the college.

Im most worried about finding time to study with the little ones at home. I cannot afford to have the girls in full time day care (I took out extra on my Stafford loan just to put them in day care the 2 days I go to school). Im having trouble finding a job that can work around my school and life schedule. Thankfully its a community school so tuition isnt much.

My back up plan in case I dont get accepted is to complete more pre-requisites and just apply for the BSN program at a private college

AspiringNurseMW,

This is one reason I love these

Forums. We get to share our struggles and our journey. I am nervous about finding time to study as well. I feel like I will just make it happen once the pressure is there. Toddlers are so demanding. I am trying to start getting my two year old on a earlier sleep schedule so I can spend my evenings studying. He has been staying up a little later with all the commotion from the kids being home for the summer. Let me know if you figure any other solutions out.

I am 34. I have five kids. Finished all my pre req's last semester and was accepted, but wait listed for my ADN program. School was difficult and I barely made it into my program, like literally. My gpa is embarrassing. I am really nervous for when the time comes to start school. But not just for the program, mostly for my children. I literally don't trust anyone with them. I fear for their safety. So much that I get anxiety if I am away from them for a long period of time. That's normal right? ? Three of my kids are in school. My youngest will be two years old when I start nursing school. The only thing that could ruin me is if I don't feel like the kids are being taken care of properly! I could have done so much better in my prereqs, but I just wanted to do the bare minimum to get by and get in. My school recently switched over to a point system starting next semester.

I do have a good support system. I have my mom to help. My husband works graveyard with overtime and will be of some help. I plan on having them juggle the kids during lecture and clinicals. I'll probably stick to a similar study schedule, studying at nights and while everyone is at school. I don't have a diploma or a GED. However I did recently graduate with my associates in math/science.

I want to make decent money to help my husband support our family and do something fulfilling. He makes a decent paycheck by himself. We have insurance. But with five children...(actually six for him, he pays child support) well you can imagine. There's just not a lot of money left for fun, activities, vacations, etc...so I plan on hitting a home run in nursing school and giving it my all. I also plan on the RN-BSN afterwards, while I work. Good luck to us all! We can do it!
