Pre nursing gpa or overall gpa?

Published

What do nursing programs care more about? Your overall gpa or the gpa you have in the prerequisite classes? Let say somebody had a 3.5 overall GPA but a 4.0 pre-requisite gpa wich will they look at?Can anybody post your gpa(overall and prerequisite)! Thank you all in advanced!

Definitely depends on the school. I know some schools who only look at overall, some schools who only look at prerequisite GPA, some schools who consider both equally, and some schools slightly favor one over the other, but consider both!!

It honestly depends on what program :) The average pre-requisite and overall GPA needed to gain acceptance also fluctuate depending on where you are applying. (Ex- sometimes the minimum GPA taken into Nursing school may be a 3.4, but at other schools you may need a 4.0)

Also- keep in mind some schools determine acceptance based on other things too (CNA/volunteering/previous careers/military/amount of credits/TEAS test score/ect)

Get in touch with a counselor and ask what your school wants :)

The programs I applied to were most concerned with grades in A&P, chem, micro, and stats. I took (or re-took) these courses at the college level to ensure the best possible grade; however, I would DEFINITELY recommend that you reach out to your desired programs and inquire as to EXACTLY what they consider - so that you don't waste any time, money, or effort on courses you may not need for purposes of admission. BEST OF LUCK!!

It's 50/50. Some do and some don't. Most universities only look at your sciences. If you plan on going for your master's degree they will not accept anything lower than 3.0 and that's counting your nursing class grades. If you go further and get your DNP you need to have a 3.8 GPA.

I'll add this too everyone in my class had 4.0 GPA prior to starting nursing school. Good luck to you!

Definitely depends on the school. Mine looks at GPA of pre-reqs and if you're "tied" with another student, they look at the classes relative to nursing (ie. AP2, micro, dev psych, eng).

Agreed, depends on the school. Most of the ones I applied to either weighed them equally, or weighed one twice as heavily as the other.

My school considers both, though pre req GPA is more heavily weighted. A point system is used that produces a single score of 1-8, with 8 being the best. The top 40 scores are accepted into the program.

Both schools I applied to only looked at your GPA in 4 specific classes and your TEAS score. The classes were different for each school, but both used a point system, with 14 being the highest score. They just went down the list and accepted however many students they had space for.

Good day:

It is school dependent. The program I am attending has a point system; yet, over the years, they have moved towards the points being mainly core sciences.

Thank you.

I'm actually not sure about how my school averages them out they average out the gpa and teas score however they don't specify which gpa.. I know they have a point system weighing heavily the biology and english(which I have done excellent in).
