Pre-health needed if taking a year off?

Hi, Quick question, Forgive my ignorance, but I'm new here and am reading a lot of comments regarding pre-health being required for getting into the RN programs, and would just like clarification. Is pre-health equivalent to high school gr. 12 University courses?

My daughter is in her senior year in high school, and did not get into the RN program she was hoping for at McMasters.. She has an 89.5% average and has taken all the pre-req (12 U science courses) needed for entry into the RN program.. We didn't realize there was an RN program through MOMAC (our bad!) so she didn't apply there.. We're wondering if she takes a year off after she graduates high school, and re-applies for the RN program at MOhawk/MAC (MOMAC) for next year, would she need to take pre-health as she is not coming directly out of high school if she waits a year? or is she fine with the courses she has taken in high school to just re-apply for next year's program? The other option is she can take the RPN and bridge, but she didn't want to go that route.. She just wants to go straight into the 4 yr RN program.

Can someone help us with this? I've read comments from people in other threads saying you need pre-health if you're not coming directly from high school? Thanks for your input!

Every program has its own requirements. Did you call the school and ask them? They will know the answers we can only guess at. Better to get the correct info from the source than go by something someone said on the internet.

I've never heard of pre-health. What is it?

I have never heard of a pre-health course. However, I do know there are some colleges that offer pre-health associate degrees. The universities I know that offer those degrees usually partner with four year colleges so that students can go into the four year college as a BSN student once the pre-health degree is completed. Is this what you mean?

Disregard if you're not in the U.S.

re-reading this and it looks like marie is in Canada so maybe it's a term used there? I have heard of pre-health classes done in the US but they were for LPN programs and I don't know how common it is. Still best to check with the school itself.

Sorry, when I say Pre-health, I mean a pre-health program.. 1 yr of selected science courses etc.. offered in Ont. colleges. I was just wondering if they are equivalent to high school courses.. Someone informed me they were, and my daughter would not need to take it but can apply directly as she's taken the required courses this year in high school. I just wanted to be sure that was true or not..

Can she take a full load of general ed classes, get as many of those out of the way as she can, and then reapply? Not sure how Canadian schools operate, but in the US not everyone declares a major right away.

Hi, thanks for that question.. Her courses taken now are all the pre-req. courses that are listed on the application, so as far as I know, she doesn't need to take general courses. I'm just trying to find out if the pre-health classes that others are referring to are equivalent to her gr. 12 U courses.. if so, if she takes a year off, then I'm hoping she doesn't need to take a pre-health program. She's taken gr. 12 university Eng. Chemistry, Biology, Physics, 2 math courses, & health sciences.. all the courses needed for applying. Otherwise if she needed pre-health, I would encourage her to just go for the RPN program starting in Jan. and not waste another year.. if that makes sense?

..just wanted to add that she certainly has always wanted to take the RN program- been her dream since she was little really... so am deciding whether she should just wait and re-apply this fall for the RN program for Sept. 2017.. Hope I'm making sense..lol

Hi, sorry, I only now am seeing your messages.. thanks for that, and yes, I agree for sure! I've been trying to call the college all morning, and am just getting voice recordings, and then a machine after that.. left my message and number.. still waiting to hear back..

If you are within driving distance, your best bet may be to go directly to the school and try to talk to someone. Colleges aren't the best at returning phone calls.
