Pre-Employment Physical Exams

Published

Quick question, I just got offered this job and they are making me take a physical. What exactly does this Pre-Employment Physical Exam entail? I just think it's stupid and intrusive.

The hospital I was working at last year fired me because I refused the flu vaccine, which is silly.... .

Wow. I have never ever heard of someone being fired for refusing to have a Flu Vaccine! Nothing like being forced into doing something that you don't want (or believe in), what happened to a patients right to refuse?

I think hospitals should have a right to require it. Ever heard of herd immunity? If I were a cancer patient and I got the flu from my nurse I would be pretty upset....

And the OP isn't talking about not wanting vaccinations because he doesn't believe in them. He already said he is ok giving them to other people. Needlephobia is a really poor reason to refuse vaccinations. Get an order for ativan if you need to, get some therapy.....

"And I am a body builder I'll be fit for quite some time"

Do you seriously believe that body builders cannot contract contagious diseases? I would like to think that you have not had your nursing education, but I guess if you're interviewing for a job, you have.

I truly hope that you can properly educate your patients and will not pass along that belief.

This situation really doesn't have anything to do with a patient's right. It's a matter of an employer's requirements for employment.

That was my first thought on reading that post, also -- "fit" does not necessarily mean "healthy."

For my health screen they drew blood, gave me a 2 TB skin tests, fitted me for the mask, did vision tests, a hearing test, a quick result urine test and a 60 drug screen urine test and they made me carry 50 lbs up and down a hallway.

I just had one and it was a urine test, TB test, an questions on paper about if I've been coughing, having cold symptoms, any loose stools, any stomach cramps, what immunizations i have had, if I've had chicken pox and if I've had the Hepatitis series and such.

This is a 5-year-old thread. Best to ask your question in a new thread.

Just had a pre-employment physical today for a major hospital in Detroit. I took an 11 panel urine drug test, eye test, color blind test, respirator fitting, TB test and general physical done by a physician. Pretty easy stuff. Respirator fitting took the longest, but all in all I was there about 60 minutes. Hope this helps :)

hello, i wanted to ask you. where you offered with the job already then they ask you for yur physical exam?
