Practical Nursing in Canada for 2 years

Hi, I am a registered nurse in the Philippines with no work experience. I enrolled at a 2-year practical nursing program at Centennial College in Toronto Canada. I already have a student visa and will be leaving this November but my classes will start on January.

My question is, will CNO allow me to take the Practical nurse licensure exam on a post-graduation work permit? I read on the Canadian Immigration website that students who graduate from a course 8 months and longer are eligible for a post-graduation work permit which will be valid for as long as the course they graduated from. I was wondering if CNO would allow me to take the licensure exam with that permit.

Thank you so much. I'm new here and registered just so I could ask this question. :)

You are ineligible as all Canadian provincial colleges of nursing require IEN candidates to be licensed in the country of education. As the Philippines does not recognize or license LPNs, you cannot be licensed as an LPN in the Philippines and as such cannot be licensed as an LPN/RPN in Canada.

Hello kamae,

Ive just read all the replies and comments of your post, and although some things are clear to me now.. there are still questions Id like to ask. Im a registered nurse in our homeland; however, I have not been practising our profession for years. These days, I have been really considering to go back to nursing. Since I currently live in Czech Republic, Im thinking to study again, but in Canada instead of going back home to get trainings and refresh myself in the nursing field. My questions are the following: 1) How much did it cost you to study for 2yrs in there? Were you exposed to hospital duty while studying? Because I need to retrain myself and get used to again in the hospital setting and direct patient care. 2) How did you apply for the school and your student visa? 3) How about the cost of living in Toronto? Is it expensive like from flats/dorm to books and other basic necessities? 4) I believe you are already an RN there, what did you do with the CNO? Does it need a working visa for the registration? Because it's a bit confusing. They said must register first to the respective regulatory board of the province where you choose to work. If Im not mistaken this is for nurses who wish to register as RN, right? I mean not for student nurses yet. I hope you will enlighten me about this matter because I really need answers for me to make this study plan happen. Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

@earlmik, according to the posts on this thread kamae took a two year RPN diploma program at centennial college, this would not qualify her as a RN only a RPN. Some of your questions regarding fees and dorm expenses can be answered by googling toronto centennial college international students tuition and residency. On top of the tuition and residence fees, plan for an additional $500 per month for transportation, food and clothing.

@dishes, Thank you. Will do that.. :)

good day i'm a registered nurse..I would like to immigrate to Canada but have been told that its best to have a job offer before applying. How long does it take to find a job in Canada?

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

I would suggest you decide where in Canada you want to live and then look at the College of Nursing's website for the province you're interested in. There's a lot more involved than simply finding a job, and the steps have to be taken in order. As for how long it will take, local nurses are having trouble finding jobs right now so for someone who is outside of Canada it could be a VERY long time.

Hi Paula hope this might help you,The times changes depending on your professional background, years of experience, age, etc. Some professions are in much higher demand than others. In general though you need to apply to as many jobs as possible and be ready to keep applying for a few months because it does take time. This article might be useful for your job hunting www uniivaa com grab-that job in Canada with a cool head.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Until you have RN registration sorted you will find it very hard to find a employer. Also check CIC website there are a few ways to get to Canada however until you sort registration you can not work as a RN
