Portage learning

Published

I am applying to a nursing school and the refered me to portage learning online for my prerequisites. Can anybody tell me if portage learning is accredited? Has anybody taken classes from them before? Did you have any problems transfering your credits?

I really appreciate the help of anybody out there who can give me some info. Thank you!

Just following up and adding on to what moved-on said.

I'm enrolled in A&P 1. I haven't taken a test yet, after about 2 weeks in and that's one of the issues with this type of course (for me at least). My plan was to do 1 module per week, but I also procrastinate a little and then never quite feel 100% ready. The hard deadlines in a normal course setting would probably work better for me.

There is a lot of information, probably more than I was expecting. You don't get the benefit of the professor saying "you need to know this". The only thing that comes close is the 60+ review questions at the end of the module. It's really more than that because one question might say "define the following" and then have a list of 12 of 15 parts of a cell (or something). Still, the information is probably much more focused than a 1000+ page A&P book would be.

I've also found that the video portion of the lecture and content, in general, doesn't do a great job of explaining. Not because the concept is difficult, but the delivery just isn't great. Searching other youtube videos can remedy this. I'm not sure how the assigned professors work in this regard. Response times have been quick for basic questions, but I haven't really asked for any in-depth course-related help.

I'm still within my 30 day period for a refund, so I'll report back after taking the first exam.

Hey how was your first exam on portage? For AP? I just finished exam 4 on Microbiology and found it extremely difficult even though I studied straight for 2 weeks ?

It was pretty tough, but in the A&P class (not sure about micro), there are questions you have to answer within the module which gives you a good idea of what to study.

@jlmcgrot thank you for the information you've shared! Is it difficult to study for the lab exams? Also, how much time do you think you allot for studying for each exam? Trying to get a good idea of how long this class will take. Thanks!

New to this, but has anyone taken pathophysiology on Portage? It seems like most people have taken A&P and/or micro on here. I'm debating whether or not to take pathophysiology and sociology on Portage or at a community college for nursing school. Any insight would be much appreciated!

I remember reading somewhere on Reddit or this forum that pathophysiology would be okay to take online but pharmacology would be suggested to take in class because a lot of it relates to nursing itself . I just can't remember exactly where I've read this . Good luck!

Yeah, but just about every class is online right now, regardless of where you take it.

Hello. Anyone taking Micro through portage right now?

I took micro in November and aced it. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. It was an easy A, however I think it's somewhat due to the professor I had . She wouldn't nit pick on every single answer and her questions were straight forward which made the answers very easy for you to remember. Two of my friends also took micro at the same time with a different Professor and her questions were deliberately very tricky to confuse students.

Thanks for responding. My professor is not so easy. Did you follow the outline for the course? I’m thinking about taking 1 lab a day so then I can focus just on the lecture modules. Also did you take Ethics at portage?

I think I know who your professor might be..a couple of my friends have taken micro and they mentioned a particular professor that makes it extra difficult to not do well ...the one I had was great, none of that extra complicated stuff.

I took ethics during undergraduate which was a couple of many years ago- there are other places you can take ethics besides portage, with straighterline not all schools accept those classes so be careful with that. Online places like Cayuga community college, Nassau community college, new Mexico junior college etc . There are so many I just can't remember them all
