Portacath access

Published

Hi, I just want to ask, when accessing the portacath, does the nurse really have to wear sterile gown? Thank you!

If your facility says so then yes.Ours does not require it.

Neither did ours. Our kits had mask, sterile gloves and that was it as far as PPE. I think the only time I wore a gown was when the patient had an active MRSA infection (knee) and we had to access the port for both IV abx and cultures.

As others have said if your hospital requires it, otherwise the standard should be a mask for the patient, the person accessing the port, and anyone else who chooses to stay in the room, and sterile gloves for the person doing the accessing.

I think a sterile gown is a bit overboard!

No gown is necessary unless the pt happens to be in isolation.PPE is used to protect the healthcare worker. In this case the use of sterile gloves and mask is to prevent infection. As a side benefit you are protected.
