Poor spelling in charting

Published

I just had a eureka moment. I have been an LPN for about five months and just realized I have been charting they word laying wrong. I have been charting for example " lying in bed watching television with no complaints" I realize now that I should have been putting laying in bed. I feel like such an idiot. Does this make me look like an incompetent nurse or do yo all have words that you thought you have been spelling right that are actually wrong? Just wondering

sort of on topic, i was following a nurse one day and went back to look at her notes because she hadn't passed something to me in report that i would have needed to call the doctor on if it was a new onset.

she has been a nurse for over 20 years.

she wrote "patient converted to winkyback rhythm. dr. xx notified."

always makes me chuckle.

You're using it correctly. You've probably seen so many people using it incorrectly that you're doubting yourself.

Thanks for posting this. When I read the original post I started second-guessing myself because I write "lying" too! lol!

Patient lying in bed. People lie (lying), things lay (laying). So a notebook could be laying on the bed next to the person who is lying there.

I lie. The toys I play with lay.

i always chart 'resting quietly on bed'

I usually always chart: "Resting in bed in semi-fowlers position........."

Or whatever position they lay.

One of the LPN's charted that the pt had "vomitted a large amount of...." The surgeon approached her and stated, "You know Jane, now matter how much she vomited there is still only one T!" Embarrassed the the heck out of her! I felt embarrassed for her and felt bad because I'm terrible at spelling as well! Especially while in Triage and you have to move quickly.
