POLL (sort of): Specialties...?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hello,

Just wondering what the interest level is regarding specialties out there...

Labour & Delivery? Oncology? Critical Care? ER? OR?

...?

We had to use this topic to introduce ourselves on our first day of nursing school. Needless to say, I was the only student in my class of 40 that was interested in Forensic Nursing. Everyone in my class kind of shifted in their seats when I told them that I was interested in perhaps becoming a Nurse Coroner. (well, somebody's gotta do it!)

Any other potential Forensic Nurses out there...?

Jot down what specialty you are interested in!

Specializes in tele, stepdown/PCU, med/surg.

Hey!

Well I'm a male nursing student and I'm not interested in L&D at all. I mean the rotation in school will be neat but that's it. I'm not far along in the program so I will change my mind but my main specialty interests so far are Telemetry and PACU!

You know, I've always kind of had an interest in being a nurse coroner. I'm definitely not planning on making the switch anytime soon, but it's always been in the back of my mind for a future, pre-retirement line of work.

Good luck to you!

My main intrest lies in working with the elderly. They are, for the most part, gracious and loving people who are (underprivileged ?) when it comes to good health care.

I am talking about in some nursing facilities where I've been...the folks who work there just don't care, so please, don't anyone get their fur ruffled....:)

Yes, I want to work with the elderly...

Julie:)

or, first assistant

although, since starting the cadaver dissection class, the forensic part has popped into my head. we are trying to piece together what he died from, the death certificate stated esrd, but he had tons of other things going on.

ya'll knew i would have to throw in something about that class, i love it!!!

I am either a Labor and Delivery or a Pediatrics person... But one of my instructors is a Foresic Nurse.. She even has her own business.. She does Rape exams on rape victims and helps gather all the evidence... Sounds really interesting... Might be something I would be interested in many years down the road when you are tired of working with "live" people :)

I'm actually hoping to go to grad school for nursing anesthesia, but forensic nursing has been another field that's on my mind. There's a pilot forensic nursing program at a school that's affiliated with the hospital where I work and it sounds really interesting.

I really want to work in a level 1 trauma center ER. I like the idea of having a high turn over rate of patients.

I have thought about forensic nursing because I like to problem solve. My only problem is there no programs available in my area were I could obtain more information. As of now I have not narrow my specialty. I have several interest in emergency, telemetry, labor & delivery, burn, and high risk nursery.

Marlita :) :p

Calililly,

Yes, I'm interested in forensic nursing also. But there isn't a program near me, (that I've found anyway!)probably since it's a "new" field. So I figure by the time I'm ready to continue my education there will be more programs to choose from. I think it sounds facinating & could be a pretty diverse field to go into.

I am interested in OB or emergency when I'm done with school. Really, I'd probably go anywhere!!:D

I am definitely going to be a pediatric nurse. When I was living in Boston several years ago, I worked at Children's Hospital there, and that's where I discovered I was meant to be a nurse. Eventually, I hope to be back at Children's in Boston again. But until then, anything in peds will be fine with me!

So far my DEFINTE 100% interest is in peds, I have worked with childern ever since graduating high school back in 1997. I took a break when I had my daughter in Nov. 97 and then from April 98-May 2001 I worked in a daycare center and I loved working with the kids however, $6.85 an hour just was not going to cut it as a single mother I wouldn't have even been able to afford a place even in the inner city (which I could never even live in) and that is sad if I worked at a daycare cener all my life as a single mom. There was this lady who had been there for 15 years but she was married. Anyway I already was interested in nursing so then I thought about it and said that is it I can do nursing and won't be rich but I will have a decent living with proper budgeting and I can still work around children. I got a job at a children's hospital in May 2001 and I am still there and I absoutely love it there. IT is a really great hospital and it is constantly expanding and they have many great things coming including taking part of the old hospital (they have new wings in the main hosptial and still adding more) but they are going to take part of the old hospital that is still there and connected to the new wings and make it a mini pediatric research center nothing huge and they are adding state of the art cardiovascular operating rooms and other state of the art operating rooms. They also have a second hospital in the metro area where I live that they are planning on expanding Other than the growth it is just a really cool hospital in my opinion to work for with people who work there that truly care about kids.

However I must admit that This semester the labor/delivery and mother/baby content has got me totally interested so now I am thinking about either maternal-newborn, neonatal or Peds. I think though it will more than likely be peds.

My classmates always go yeah Tonya is defintely a Peds nurse. People in my class are good at guessing who would be good at what because it turns out that person is interested in that area the other person can picture them in.
