Thank you for all of the advice, and to the two ladies that have posted. A little update, now that we are into the meat of our nsg fundies book, 6 chapters a day, I found some really cool adults, just be open and give them a chance, they prolly whine because they are even more scared than we are, I mean, I still walk around the hospital looking like a deer in headlights, but seeing someone in my boat makes it all better. Ofcourse there is still the bad apples, they have formed a clique, and question every little thing the instructor says and start to argue with them, I believe the teacher knows better than any of us, therefore what she says is like bible to me, especially when it comes out of the nursing book that I am sure was not written by some student wanting to impress someone. Shine with your clinical skills, test scores, and bedside manner, not trying to correct someone that took it apon themselves to make the new breed of nurses to follow in their footsteps. Since I like sports, I think of my instructors as my coach, the staff we follow for clinicals the starters, and me the lowly freshmen as being the practice squad. I'm not out to prove anything like these people are except that I am competent enough to earn my license and get a dream job that will leave me with self satisfaction everyday when I punch the clock and head home, I'll question to clairify, not feed my ego, nursing school shattered that ego REAL QUICK! lol

Well done I applaud you. Like the two other female posters I dont like whiners either. When I started reading this thread I thought you a bit egotistical/ idealisic but now you have learnt to deal with them and differenciate between the types of classmates you have you are well on the way to putting up will all the whining you will hear from both colleagues and even worse from patients (you said their whining was different but if you listen it isnt that different, they argue with nurses and medics about treatments and diagnosis not to mention the everyday niggles of a bored patient lol). Good luck with your future and dont forget to set aside a little time to moan yourself it helps you feel closer to colleagues who know what you are going through.

Interesting...the comments about the "older students" being the ones that argue with instructors, argue with nurses and medics, etc. I **guess** I qualify as an older female student (47, ya think?) and I would like to put out there that possibly what you are seeing here is the realization that comes with age that The People In Charge don't always know everything and older people are more willing to challenge and confront (at least if you were raised post-60's). This comes from myriad personal experiences of having every one from sales clerks to government employees to personal physicians to real estate agents saying..."really?...hmm... I guess I didn't think of that" when you brought up an overlooked point. In fact, it can benefit the entire class. I'm thinking in particular of Assessment Skills 101, where the lecture was on lung sounds, and the instructor was reading from the book where it said lung sounds in a patient with a consolidated pneumonia would be increased. I questioned her on that. She repeated it. I repeated back "lungs sounds in a patient with a consolidated pneumonia would be increased, not decreased?" She nodded. I said " I disagree." She said, "I do too." Now, it may be that I'm coming from previous training/experience as a paramedic (a card I play close to the chest) when I say lung sounds in a patient with a consolidated pneumonia will be decreased; regardless, see what questioning can bring forth? So take it with a grain of salt when the older females argue... perhaps in another 20 years you will understand better...

Cutting the op some slack here . . . .but I have to agree that there is alot of whining.

In fact, when I was an anatomy proctor, we made t-shirts for the professor that said "No Whining".

And the truth is SOMETIMES SOME women get together and "man-bash" or "work-bash".

There is one male RN where I work who is a terrible gossip too by the way.

Irwin - sounds like you are doing well, from your further posts.
