PLEASE HELP! TOPIC-Men in Nursing

I am a first year nursing student and i was wondering if anyone could help me with my school project. I need a response to this question, "Men in nursing...have they suffered discrimination because of their gender?"

I have definitely seen male nurses treated differently around here, but if anything I've seen them as victims of reverse discrimination.

Where I live our community has very high numbers of people invloved in a particular religion, that promotes obedience, etc. of men.

So the male nurses around here are treated as if they have a much higher status then the female nurses.

Hey Joru

There is no reason to pretend that Men and Women are perfectly interchangable. OK? We are not the SAME. (We are equal, yes!, but not the same. This is agreed?)

The contribution that men make to the nursing profession is BIG.

As a nurse and a man--you have an opportunity to really be a BIG CONTRIBUTER to a wonderful career.

Anything I need to add to that? You wanna deal with details of the difference and how it makes people feel and what should you do about it?

Figure it out, dude. (Really, it's been a great career--and I'm still figuring it out.)

I haven't seen anything so far, although some patients don't want male nurses. They do ask us to do different things sometimes, for example, when there is a large patient that needs to be moved they usually hunt down the guys. That's not just nursing though, where (in a lab) I used to work they made the guys carry out all the haz-waste drums. I wouldn't call it "discrimination" though. Like another poster said, you might even get favored because you're a man because there is still some gap between men and women in the workplace in certain areas of the country.

I would say no. Men are not suffering in nursing due to discrimination. Not that it's unheard of, but as a rule, no.

For the most part, we "suffer" along with our female collegues the same issues of pay, staffing shortages, RN to patient ratios, etc.

hi! im just new here. I really just want to say that here in my country, descrimination among male nurses are lessening....though there are few people who would still think nursing profession as only for females....I'm also a first year nursing student and i too had suffered but only a little. in our school we have a good number of male enrollees....and i think that the nos. of male nursing students would continue to increase....:)

Just a quick note to tell you that I've worked with plenty of nurses from the Phillipines and quite a number have been men. I have found that virtually every one of them are terrific nurses and it has been a pleasure to work beside them. You hang in there, dude. Maybe we'll meet face to face in the unit someday.

if you are a male nurse, try to apply for an obstetric or labor and delivery position, there's blatant discrimination. you will be looked over. how many L&D RN's out there that are male?

thanks for the compliment. many also of my friends took nursing and many are just like me....hoping for a better job abroad...

its really sad to me that manyof RNs in here are all going abroad....its really just because they just want their families to have a better life....i guess its really have to be like that....its so hard to have a carreer here especially in this times....manyof my schoolmates here also have a plan to go to other countries and if God will I will too....

I had observed that many of my relatives and friends are all taking nursing course. and even if theres really someone who critisizes my male colleagues for choosing this carreer they nowreally do not care so much....and i think many of the Filipinos now had been accustomed to see male nursing students, like me....:)
