Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am planning on taking, Anatomy & Physiology 2 and Microbiology next semester. I am very nervous. I know I can do it... can someone please share their experience and give me advice to prepare myself for next semester?

Plan to work hard. It's a lot of information and if you don't keep up with the reading you will struggle. The other thing that really helped me was having a great study group. We all had strengths and weaknesses that complimented each other so it worked well. We were all very busy and many of our study sessions were group text quizzes.

I took Microbiology, physiology and spanish (i have no spanish speaking background) all in the same semester and ended up passing with all A's (I'm also a single mom, working part time, and my son has educational issues so it was stressful helping with his homework and then doing mine). I don't say this to toot my horn. I say this because it seemed impossible to do all of that and do well especially since every single nursing program out here tells you not to take them prereqs together. The study groups I had for physio and micro were amazing and really helped me succeed.

Although above had great ideas! I was very different. It very much depends on how you interpret information. I succeeded more by avoiding the study groups. If I needed help I wouldn’t hesitate to email the professor. Sit in the front of the class, stay organized, get a planner, have everything you need. Study every day so that the material becomes very familiar and you can do it! I have three toddlers under 3 (twins). Although it was such a difficult semester I was very prepared. Also! Be the person that is hands on for all of the labs and lab assignments. Things are so much easier when you have worked through the processes yourself! Good luck! It’s 10000% doable!

Hello, I did not take micro and anatomy 2 together, I took micro first then anatomy 2. When I took anatomy I noticed how I had to review some of the stuff I learned in micro like the immune system. the anatomy class had many topics that went hand in hand with micro. I know many people out there that have done it and said it's hard but not impossible to do. If those are the only 2 classes you will be taking and you have good study skills I think you will be just fine.

EEK! I personally would not recommend doing this. These classes are all about digesting large amounts of information quickly.

I would email your (future) profs and see if you can get the book/materials/powerpoints early and start to pre-study.

Good luck!

I think this is a good idea, she should! it's better to enter the nursing program one semester late than to risk getting a bad grade. Sadly my micro professor was not that good ... the power points had "fill in the blanks" and the only way to fill it in was to not ever miss a day of class.

Agreed! I would split them up in two semesters if possible. My micro professor was the same way. It really is like taking two classes in one, because micro especially is lab heavy

@Dmyers2498,

I had the same concerns when I took A&P 2 and Micro during Spring 2019. I also work full-time in a very stressful deadline-driven professional job. So, needless to say, it was ALOT. But I had to do it in order to get my prerequisites completed in time.

And although it was extremely challenging, I had good teachers and good study habits. I was proactive with questions when I didn’t understand something. I let my teachers know that I was really invested in doing well. When I was struggling, I talked with them about my concerns.

Given those challenges, I actually really enjoyed the material. Micro is fascinating! And there was some helpful overlap in content between the two classes in the last half of the semester.

I kept my eyes on the prize, finished the semester with a 4.0, and got into my program! And I start my MSNEL in February!

Anything is possible if you want it badly enough. Good luck!

It definitely can be done as I did the same thing. Granted those were the only classes I took last semester in which it definitely got challenging. I also worked a full time job but towards the end I had to definitely take time off. I lucked out because unlike A&P 1 and chemistry I took the semester before, A&P 2 and microbiology Exams were after each other oppose to the same exact week. This helped a lot as I could just really focus on one class at a time for the exam.

In comparison I definitely put in 30x more of my attention into A&P 2 then microbiology as it was a lot more work. Microbiology wasn’t too hard it just wasn’t interesting too me at all so it was more tedious than anything. I would say that I would study for a microbiology exam the night before maybe 2 nights before, and study for weeks for a A&P 2 exam plus models and labs.

expect to loose some sleep and have only a work and school or just school life. But It definitely can be done. I earned an A+ in A&P2 and a A in microbiology.
