I am fifty, have a BA in history with quite a bit of science. I am looking to switch careers and was hoping to get some feedback from any career changers out there. Maybe I'm too old to get hired? LPN, CNA, RN, Med Tech., Radiology... what is the best path to take to insure employment? I think I would find it fulfilling to work in a Hospice role, but any feedback/thoughts from any of you would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

I started as a CNA then went forward into nursing. It'd give you a chance to see the field and get to know the ropes well enough to decide what school to go to and what path to take.

I'm turning 50 this year. I started back to school in my late 40's, and graduated when I was 48. I became an RN, and had no trouble getting job offers at that age. I think just about any position in the health services would be happy to have you, regardless of age.

alps2sea,

I would suggest CNA if you want a ton of job opportunities. It seems that everywhere you look there is an opening for several CNA's. But, if you were considering going to school for something like your BSN in an accelerated format, be careful. Some schools will only accept prerequisite science credits that are no more than 5 or 10 years old. So, depending on when you earned your undergrad degree, you make have to take those prereqs all over again.

Thank you so much. Ho are you liking it? Thanks again.

I went back to school in my 40s. Go for it, however, sciences such as microbiology and A&P expire after 5 years, so if your sciences are older than this, you may have to retake them. Consult the nursing program you wish to apply to. Good luck.;)

Definitely check the program you are interested in. At my school there is no 5 year cap on pre-reqs.

That was good to hear. I'll check it out. So what is your field, and do you like it?

Thanks,

Tony

I'm 50 years old and leaving nursing. I'm thinking of going into social work and possibly getting my MSW and become a LCSW. But I will be 54 before I finish my MSW....if I live that long!!! LOL!!!

Are you sure you want the be a nurse? Work as a CNA before you decide to apply for nursing school.
