Hello Everyone
Can anyone help me out here? I have to do a Critique of a nursing theory for a foundations of inquiry subject. This is a little new to me so I was wondering if anyone knows of an interesting theory I may work on. Any input would be appreciated.

Have you been given a nursing theorist or you have to develop your own Nursing theory?
Sugestion: Some nursing theorist model................. Quality of nursing care theory or Transcultural nursing theory or Theory of Caring or Theory of nursing as Caring.
The list goes on............................
Hi There Jayna, at first we were told we had to do a theory from topic 4 of our study guide which introduced 3 theories - Activities of Daily Living; Self Care; and Epidemiology (are these theories as such?),so I emailed him and asked if they were the actual theories he wanted us to critique and he has now come back and said that I may chose any nursing theory from any text book and critique it. Sorry if I seem a bit vague but have only just started reading this subject as I am doing 3 others at the moment. So I guess I just need to pick a theory and review it, well thats sort of how I understand it. I now wish I had started working on this particular subject earlier as I am struggling to grasp some of the concepts, though find it easier to work on one subject/assignment at a time. Thanks for your input it is much appreciated.
Cheers Tracy

I personally like Dorethea Orem's theory - it has the advantages of simplicity and clarity. Calista Roy I have found to be a little complex.

This gives some very good overviews of the theorists and might help you choose one that you can related to.

Nursing theory is always soooo much more enlightening when you have had some "mind enhancement", try that.

Thanks to all of you who replied to me. I have chosen a nursing process theory by Ida Jean Orlando. It is a mid-range theory and doesnt seem too hard to follow. Just have to try and find more on it now. I have a few textbooks and have found one website which is ok so will just keep plodding. If anyone knows much about this particular theory, or about doing a critique on a theory any input would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Tracy :)

Hi Richo,
Ithink Roy's model is very interesting. Boston College has good information on her and the model. Good Luck!

Florence Nightingale's theory actually "counts" among professors. Truly a person before her "time". Leininger's transcultural might be a good one. I enjoy Jean Watson personally. You can look up Watson on the Web.

Anyone doing a nursing degree should have nursing theories coming out their ears (well, I certainly did!). This type of assignment requires you to read some, decide which one/s are applicable to the practice you're interested in, and explain how it's relevant. Many nursing theories are very airy-fairy so you need to try and explain it in simple terms.
