Hello,

This is my first post. I am finished with my pre-recs for nursing and will start my final 2yrs for my RN. I was told there are hospitals that will hire you and pay for your schooling, but you have to work for them when you graduate.

Does anyone have any info on this or any hospitals that will do this.

thanks you

If you want to talk directly you can email me [email protected]

Thank you.

I have known several nurses who signed two-year contracts w/ hospitals to have their tuition paid, and all regretted it.

All of them borrowed money to pay the tuition back so that they could quit jobs htey hated and were trapped in.

If you plan to do this, look into it carefully. Make sure to speak to nurses who work for the hospital, first.

Do your research...many hospitals make offers like this but you will probably not be able to pick which area you get to work in. They put you where they need people. Also the benefits aren't usually what they would be for nurses not under contract (I've heard of this happening at the hospital I'm going to school thru). During the last semester of nursing school where I go, recruit people from all of the hospitals in the area throw banquets and luncheons giving us all of the information we need about contracts they offer, benefits, open positions, etc... You probably won't find out too much until you're closer to graduating. Good luck!

hi,

I checked in my finiacial aid and found that since there is such a shortage of nurses. my state (pa) will re-imburse me if I sign a contract stating that I will stay in the state for three years. My suggestion would be to look into financial aid you might qualify for grant, scholarship, or work study. I am doing work study in the computer lab for my nursing program. I wish you the best of luck though, its pretty confusing doing all of the paper work for financial aid. good luck in school.

have you been accepted yet into a nursing program, keng67goat? if so, you might want to contact some of the hospitals that you would like to work in.

i'm using my acceptance letter to try to get a per diem unit assistant position (weekends, holidays, etc.) with the caveat that once i finish school i might want to continue my relationship with the hospital. a day after i contacted the human resources director, i received a phone call from the nursing department to come in for an interview (this tuesday). who knows, maybe i can get something for school...ya never know until you try.

good luck!

Someone told me Tulane in New Orleans did. Also remember many hospitals can pay off your student loans if you work for them.

Specializes in Trauma ICU, MICU/SICU.

I have scholarship through Lehigh Valley Hospital (Allentwon, Bethlehem, Quakertown, PA). They pay for my tuition plus $500 every semester. I owe them 1 year after I graduate. I also just started working there in December as a PSNA (Professional Student Nurse Assistant aka Nursing Assistant). They give PSNA's and Scholarship students first crack at the Critical Care Internship, Step-down internship before they consider students from the outside. I will be interviewing on March 1st for the Critical Care Internship and a job in the Trauma Neuro ICU. I currently work for the same director in the Transitional Trauma Unit so this gives me a real edge.

The benefits are great. All full time employees get free health care, 4 weeks vacation, etc.

So far my employment has been great. I only owe them 1 year after, so if I don't like working there as an RN, I can quit. I don't think I will though.

I would find out if you can interview ahead of time for the RN positions or if you just take whatever is available.

Come to PA, its great here. Lots of competition between the big hospitals.

Thanks for your input. suemom2kay, your position sounds great. I am in th eprocess of finishing my last prerecs. The school I attend has a rn in program, but the problem is I am getting out of the military and want to come back to the mainland. I really do not care where I go to school or work.

Funny thing is I have considered PA. I also invest in property and it is dirt cheap in PA. but the problem is there is not a whole lot of jobs there at least where I will invest. My goal is to work in a trauma hospital or as a flight nurse.

Also I want to work nights all the time w/ as much over time as possible.

Just don't want to burn myself out.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Trauma, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac.

We do here in St. Petersburg. I think they recently raised the commitment to 2 1/2 years. You work for us part-time as a tech for 20 hours, getting paid for 40 hours, plus books and tuition paid for. It's a sweet deal.

You didn't say where you lived, and where you want to work. I'm in Florida.

A lot of hospitals and states do. Just be careful in your research. Maryland has a scholarship if you agree to work in the state after you graduate. One year for each year of scholarship. You can do a search on each state's financial aid webpage for state offered grants and scholarships.

Many of the hospitals do, but I wouldn't work at some of them. I took a hospital scholarship, but it's some place I want to work. I asked around to make sure it wouldn't be a decision to regret. The amount is a little less than some of the bigger hospitals, but it's a good trade off to work at a nicer facility. An extra grand or two isn't worth it if I'm going to be overworked in a place with unsafe practices later.

Lehigh Valley is a Level 1 Trauma Center and our medevac is run by http://www.universitymedevac.com/ If you click on "Flight Team," you can see the requirements for being a flight nurse.
