afraid I hurt Pt w/injection
I made a big mistake. I didn't tell an instructor, because an instructor wasn't present. I was the only student at the health dept. I did not have a nurse w/me. It was busy, I had confidence I could do it alone. I'm still thinking, is it possible now, to inject the medication and get a blood return at the same time? I feel I stabilized the needle well. You aspirate, you get blood return if you're in a vein. But, is it possible to get a return of blood while injecting the needle? I know rhogam can be given IV. But, the rhogam designed for IM injections is not supposed to be given IV. So I don't think the chance of harm is great. It didn't happen a few weeks ago, it happened yesterday. I won't see her again until tomorrow. I'm scared I will get kicked out of school if I tell the truth. I truely believe they will find a way to flunk me out if I tell. I will be in serious trouble for not having a nurse w/me while giving it, and I think they will kick me out for that. I just pray to God that woman is OK. I'd rather be kicked out than her have some kind of problem b/c of what I did. This is awful. I was thinking today, I was just being paranoid, it's probably just blood from the injection site, maybe I did it too hard, or I moved it around without not realizing it?? But, I'm still confused about the whole thing.

need help w/narrative note
abd soft/hard, distended/nondistended, BS active/nonactive x 4? hypoactive/hyperactive/absent? that's all I do for a normal patient, if there's something off, you need to address it if it's distended...did you feel a mass, did it feel hard? if so where ? you said the skin is stretched, where? over entire abd? is pt just fat? if so, just put abd distended I had trouble being too wordy at first as well. It's good to be descriptive, but to the point.

afraid I hurt Pt w/injection
Hey, I just posted this on student forum. Thought I'd post here b/c you guys may be able to help me more. Hi, I am a nursing student. A few weeks ago, I gave Rho gam IM. I believe it came in a prefilled syringe, where you attach the dose into the syringe. Now, I inserted the needle, I aspirated...no blood. So, I injected it. As I was injecting the vaccine, blood came up into the syringe. I have given I'd say about 10 IM injections. I have been thinking about this. Is it the syringe? Anyone familiar w/it? I aspirated, but there was no blood return. I aspirated sufficiently enough to get a blood return. Why would blood come up into the syringe as I am injecting the medication? Another thing I was thinking about. Was there air in the syringe, could something like that have happened and me not know it???? Even so, I still aspirated, and blood would return if I had hit a vein. Please help. I am scared I harmed a pregnant woman. Please tell me what you know.

Becoming a nursing assistant after one semester?
Where the hospital everyone in my class mostly works as nursing assistants (or patient techs), we don't need to be certified. Completion (passing grade) of 1st semester of nursing school is sufficient.

When to report a classmaste to your clinical instructor.
interesting how you think to go to the instructor, and not the student. My class is like a family, and I know other nursing schools are the same way. I would talk to the student. If you want to go to the instructor, I would tell the instructor she needs to review hanging an IV with the clinical group, because I have seen some mistakes made recently. I would actually refuse to say the name of the student, unless the instructor forced me. Also, as someone else mentioned....why would another student sit there and watch another student make a mistake? What is that about? I think you need an attitude adjustment. You are there to learn, not to compete with other students and tell on them like children. It's very important to help the other classmates out, it's a learning experience for all of you. I think your instructor may find fault with you for allowing her to do something wrong and just sitting there and letting it happen! (I'll bet you money on it!) I'm glad your not in my class.

Having Problems finding pulses
Practice on yourself. Place 3 fingers where your pulse is. Notice how when you press one finger down harder than the others you feel that the pulse is stronger? Don't start counting until you have it for certain, it's ok to wait 10 seconds or so and make sure you have it. If I have trouble w/it, I"ll usually do the 3 finger thing. And also, I know where the pulses are supposed to be..that helps. You'll be able to do it, trust me! It was hard at first for me too.

Guess what happened to me at clinicals today??? Ugggh
uhhh I'd hate to see what will happen to you when you actually make a mistake in front of the instructor!

Externship or take the summer off?
I would do it, unless you are so burned out you can't take it anymore (which is probably how many of your classmates feel). Having a break over the summer messed me up a little last fall. I came into the hospital for clinical and felt so lost! Also, it would be a great experience for you.

Mobile, AL
I love Mobile, and the surrounding area. Mobile is a medium size city, with maybe 500,000 people? I think it's beautiful, it's over 300 years old. I miss those overgrown oak lined streets and historic homes. I'm from Hunstville, and I went to school at USA for a few years. Mobile is my favorite part of Alabama, I miss it.

Do you get nervous before going to clinical?
I'm in 3rd semester, and I'm terrified too. First semester was hell for me, 2nd semester..it got better towards the end. And inserting a cath isn't that bad! Feel lucky that you get to do it on someone who isn't awake...that will be much easier for you! I get nervous when I"ll be around all these tubes I know nothing about. I'm nervous around the IV pump, sometimes I go blank. I'm scared to death of having a patient with a chest tube, or any type of GI tube....I just hope my instructor this semester will explain it to me. And remember...if you don't know something, ASK! Just say, I have never done this before, could you review it with me before I do it.

how does your nursing school deal with pregnant nursing students?
We have a pregnant girl in our class (BSN). She's already an LPN. I do believe she had to get a note saying it was ok. Of course, she already works full time at the hospital. Our dean has 7 children...so she understands, lol. She's due I think the week of finals, so she's gonna try to take them early. My clinical instructor last semester was pregnant, she delivered a couple weeks after the semester ended. By the way, other health issues sometimes do require a note. We had a girl get lice from her son...so obviously she had to have a note! I don't understand why you're complaining, you should work with your school in a more positive way.
