Planned Parenthood, Women's Health Issues, Nurses could rule the US

Nurses Activism

Published

With more than 3,000,000 nurses, yes that is 3 MILLION PLUS nurses in the US why aren't we ruling? Just think if every nurse emailed their representatives in government and told them to stop trying to block access to contraceptives, sexual education, and attempting to squash Planned Parenthood. Or donated 1, 10, or 100 dollars to the ANA PAC? Nurses votes ALONE could determine who is President. Even more important nurses can play a huge role in local politics, what are a few deciding for all at local school board meetings?

Doesn't it bother anyone else that the whole health care system was set up to benefit Drs and Hospitals, nurses were put in the bed charge because at the time when insurance companies and hospitals were developing nurses didn't matter and had no power. Why nursing care is not paid for directly (which would also make nursing the most revenue producer in a hospital rather than a revenue drain) Why chronic disease management by RN's is not reimburseable even though research shows its extremely effective. Blah blah blah, honestly after going on 27 years in nursing I feel like nothing has changed at all. Isn't it time we had a revolution?

Just a couple of points here.

1) Hospice does not perform euthanasia on it's patients. Actually, I routinely start my pts on abx and appetite stimulants. There is no reason to try to speed up the process. The truth is the hospice will make more money the longer the pt lives. I routinely give "massive" doses of morphine. When I worked neuro ICU, the standard pain med order was 1-4mg IV morphine every 4 hours. I now routinely give 20mg SL an hour and even have gone as high as 40mg an hour to control pain. Why? Because the patient needed. Believe it or not, but that amount of morphine isn't even close to being lethal. Hospice s not in the business of killing people. I'll go ahead and step off my soapbox now...

2) In the US, we are supposed to have separation of church and state. Therefore, the government shouldn't restrict and medical procedure based upon personal religious beliefs.

3) In birth control news, Rick Santorum's largest financial backer believes women should just keep their legs closed rather than take the pill. I feel like I'm living in the 1950's:

Santorum Backer: Most Cost-Effective Birth Control? Keep Your Legs Closed - Forbes

2) In the US, we are supposed to have separation of church and state. Therefore, the government shouldn't restrict and medical procedure based upon personal religious beliefs.

This is the most important point. The religious views of some shouldn't negatively impact the lives of others.

The state of Virginia is trying to define personhood as a fertilized egg which would make many forms of birth control illegal let alone abortion. If someone chooses to follow their religion, then go right ahead but it should affect the laws for others.

hey, who was talking about euthanizing old people ?

sorry, cfitz rn page 5: "

before long other "unwanted" human beings - elderly, disabled, etc., will find themselves being "terminated" as well."

You're going on the assumption that nurses agree on every issue. But we don't. Believe it or not, some of us...oppose legalized abortion...don't want to pay for YOUR contraception...support the right of faith based institutions not to cover certain procedures and medications, either for their patients or employees (although we treat every person, regardless)...are very worried about the erosion of our First Amendment rights and aren't about to be fooled into thinking the HHS mandate is about healthcare for women...believe that oral contraception is healthcare...

All arguments are valid except...........a woman still needs the right for birth control and abortion. Sorry to all you "religious" people. Abortion is awful I agree and I have never had one BUT it has to be available. Just sayin.

Please don't impose your religion on me. It's YOUR religion. As i stated before, I'm not trying to impose my voodoo on you. As a nurse I have to participate in procedures which I find as repugnant as abortion because others believe differently than I do. For those who believe in life at any cost- no matter how painful, futile and ethically challenging it is- I don't refuse to assist because it would be wrong for me to impose my "dogma" on you. How would you behave as a nurse in a country with socialized medicine - where cutoffs are imposed on care for the very young (under 20 weeker fetuses) and the very old (90 year olds denied heart surgery)? So please,everyone, don't waste our time with your religious postings. They're a waste of time and don't contribute anything to the ethics of our practice. Ethical precepts are not religious!

Good point Subee. As for certain procedures being refused on a 90 yr old......well that is questionable. I see too many old demented people that are taking up space meaning.....being worked on for no reason other than families do not know what to do. I see terrible outcomes which were obvious going to be that outcome but families continue to think that their loved one will be fixed. A lot of the problems are due to physicians doing too much, getting paid for more torture for the patient. Just sayin.

If you want birth control, pay for it yourself. If you can’t afford it, then what are you doing having sex? I’m hearing a lot of “stay out of my uterus...but first pay for my contraception”. Here’s a radical idea--take responsibility for your own actions, and don’t go making other people pay for your voluntary medications. Just sayin.

mmmm Alpha Omega.......your argument "sounds" intelligent but it will not happen. People are going to have sex. Contraception is a lot cheaper than paying for the birth of a baby, plus all the govt. handouts to the mom and the baby, and all the free medical for the baby, etc. afterwards. I wonder how you feel about non-citizens who do not speak a word of English, are brought here by their famillies and get FREE medical care? So you are against low cost or free contraception.......and ok about people who have not put a dime into the system getting free hospitalizations, surgeries??? I see it almost everyday I work and by the way, I happen to work in a hospital which is smack in the middle of a neighborhood where the cheapest house, a 2 bedroom/1 bath is probably $800,000. So I am not talking about a community, govt. hospital, but one where the wealthy of the community go, the ones who have insurance.

[color=#2d2d2d]first of all, contraception is already low cost. oc is about $20 per month, condoms about $1 each. but that's not really the point.

[color=#2d2d2d]

[color=#2d2d2d]second, if they roll back the hhs mandate, all the contraception won't magically disappear. it will still be there on the shelves for those who choose to buy it(with their own money).

[color=#2d2d2d]

[color=#2d2d2d]thirdly, this whole "debate" was created out of thin air by this administration to fuel their own agenda. before the hhs mandate, employers had the right to offer contraceptives through their health insurance or not. an employee who didn't like it was free to find another job with an employer who was more in line with their way of thinking. there were still choices and nobody was forced to act against their religious beliefs. then obama decied to stir up the pot, and have us all fighting amongst ourselves. now, people are screaming for something that was never guaranteed in the first place. i wonder how many people realize they are being used and manipulated? how many people have any idea how this violation of the first amendment can very quickly lead to other violations?

[color=#2d2d2d]

[color=#2d2d2d]fourth, what right does anybody have to reach into my pocket and take my hard earned money to subsidize their sex life?

[color=#2d2d2d]

[color=#2d2d2d]i take responsibility for my own sexual activity. i'm not asking anybody to do something i'm not willing to do myself. i walk my talk.

*** great, next we will learn that health plans offered by jehovah witness owners will not have to cover blood transfusions.

They are taking your hard earned money for illegals health which again is tons more $ than $20 pills.
