pins....what do you think?

I'll be graduating from my ADN program in May 2005, and need advice on our class pins. I'm the class president, and the officers get to decide what our fundraising money is spent on (we have about $1400). We're required to buy our own pins, and the cost is between $50 and $75. Maybe I'm about to be a blasphemer, but I don't see what the big deal is about the pin; it has the year our program was founded on it, not our graduating year, and i've never seen a single nurse wearing his or her class pin. we have a lot of students who are stretched financially, and I'd rather see them be able to put that money toward NCLEX-RN fees or something. We're considering subsidizing the cost of the pins (or part of the cost) with a good chunk of the money. What do you all think? And should we push the issue about being required to have them? A few students have complained to me about it.

I won't even get into the brouhaha over white dresses and caps for the ceremony.

Re: the Pins issue. I personally think that the school should pay for this, just as they pay to have dipomas printed.
Yep, they pay for that allright. After you submit your graduation application fee.

So, this pinning--is it like a Navy SEALS deal, where they jam it into your flesh? Because, I'm pretty sure some of my instructors would get into that.

We were discussing it today. They are not allowed to.

Because.......

Someone would have to:

Write an incident report.

Call someone to clean up the blood.

Call for orders, you will need pain meds.

Arrange for a "Psych consult" (for your PTSS)

Think of it this way.... it will be the only time they are NOT jammin' it in ya.

my opinion for what it's worth is that you should be proud to wear your pin and it represents the school you graduated from as well. It also depends on what area of nursing you are employed in.Generally not worn in the O.R., nor is other jewelry. :nurse:

I felt proud to wear my pin when I graduated, it is one way of distinguishing you as a professional nurse,especially when so many other workers wear scrubs as well as the nursing staff. I was proud to be able to show the school that I graduated from. Earning your pin is alot of work.

OMG.....Office Space....there are a few of us at work that drive everyone else crazy quoting it. =) Our favorite is Lumberg (the boss)...."Ummm...yeah...I'm gonna need to you to ahead and put that foley in" And when we get one of our "memos"....we refer to the TPS reports.....too funny.

Our pins costed between 18 and 100+. The brass pin was 18, gold plated was more and the 14 ct gold was over 100. I have seen several nurses where I work who wear there pin on their namebadge.

You got that right. Especially about the cats.

What troubles me most is that I know myself pretty well, and I know that in a year--two if I'm lucky--I'll be thinking to myself what a magical experience nursing school was, how I learned so much--and not just about nursing, but about life, the universe, and my place in it all--and I'll get all nostalgic and stupid and decide I'm ready to go for my BSN. For all my going into this thinking that if I was going to work in healthcare, I might as well do something interesting and get paid reasonably well for it, I've done gone and decided this is going to be more than a job.

Hell, at the rate things are going, I could end up teaching nursing someday. Er, maybe not.

It takes a special kind of lunatic to decide that being a nurse isn't thankless enough--I'm going to be a nursing teacher. Thank God for them all, but my, they are a demented bunch.

I graduate May 13th!!!!! WOO HOO! We had to buy our own pins, but they were only like 50 bucks as compared to 75 or 100. I have kind of a unique situation though... I am graduating in the first generic BSN class from my university, but next fall our university is changing names, so I'm also graduating in the last class from my university! I think that's kind of special, so I'm going to wear my pin. :p

Well, my school pins range from $58.00-325.00...lets get real...I'm a student and I'm broke. My class decided to boycot the school and not buy the pins...we found a company online that made the design we wanted for 6.95...they look better than the school pins...what can they do..not pin any of us? No pinning ceremony? No way!

We also boycotted the pins. We were all going to order them from a company for about $6 each. But apparently our school is now GIVING us a pin (worth about $6). :chuckle Works for me! Besides, if you get all centimental later and decide you want one, you can go pick one up, (at least ours) are the same from year to year.

Why can't the people who want the pins be allowed to get them, and those who don't just not get them?

There's no need to get snarky about those who want the pins, either. Just because something isn't important to the OP doesn't mean it isn't important to her classmate(s).

Everything doesn't have to be a political statement. Sometimes you have to decide which windmills to tilt after.
