Pima Community College or Northern Arizona University

I'm scheduled to start the nursing program at PCC next semester, but received a spot on the alternate list for NAU. I was wondering if anyone could give me a little info on their experiences to either program. The NAU program is not at the normal campus in Flagstaff, it is in Tucson where they only accept 20 people. If I get a seat for NAU, I'm not sure whether or not I should take it. Any advice?

I'm actually an NAU-Tucson nursing student, so I hope I can help. I've loved my instructors throughout the program, especially my clinical instructors. They've all seemed like they really wanted us to succeed. Some of my classmates have complained that Flagstaff treats us distance-learning students as "second-class citizens", but I really haven't noticed that. I actually feel mostly prepared for my first year as a nurse, and I feel ready to take NCLEX when I graduate. Also, I was on the alternate list when I got accepted, too, so it can happen

If I were you, I would choose NAU again, especially knowing what I know now. I can't really speak about PCC, because I don't have any experience with their nursing program :) My understanding, though, is that PCC is a 4 semester program for an ADN, whereas NAU is now a 5 semester program for a BSN. Might as well do the 5th semester if you can afford it :twocents: Hope this helps!

Thanks for replying! I actually got a seat yesterday!! I decided that it would be an honor to graduate from NAU's program considering they're acceptance process especially here in Tucson. I think what I was scared of most was of the teachers and how dedicated they'd be, so I'm glad to hear that you've enjoyed your instructors! I'm so excited but nervous at the same time...thanks again for your reply! :loveya:

Hey, congrats to another new Lumberjack! ;)

Hi,

I'm glad you got in!

I'm planning to apply at this BSN program in Tucson, and am oh so nervous. If you don't mind my asking, what was your cumulative/prereq GPA when you applied?

Thanks, and congratulations

I think my prereq GPA was around a 3.6 or 3.7 :specs:

The first time I applied was for this fall semester. I had a 3.7 GPA but didn't even get onto the alternate list. I was so disappointed in myself :sniff: Afterwards, I planned on going to Pima and than doing NAU's RN to BSN program afterward. Well, during summer I got my CNA license and started volunteering in hospice. Even though I felt my chances were slim at getting into NAU because my GPA had dropped to like 3.65, I decided I might as well try. The second time I got in! I think my healthcare experience and volunteer experience I got during summer helped my chances. They give you extra points for them. Plus, when I took the entrance exam, I scored between 80 and 94 on all of the components, including being above average on all of the components. They use those scores to determine admission too. But please, if you don't get in the first try, keep trying! ;) You can use your previous test scores and essay if you want, or you can redo them. Hope that helps!
