PICO -T for nurse retention. PLEASE HELP

Published

hello yall

I am currently in my last semester for my rn to BSN and taking leadership. This is my second time taking this class and its holding me back from graduation. I'm ready to graduate but i need some help. I'm recently turned in my pico question but my professor is not happy. I am doing my pico on nurse retention. I am doing my clinicals on a non profit community facility that is struggling with nurse staffing. The hospital is broke so there is no tuition reimbursement or loan repayment. I came up with the idea to add the facility as a critical nursing shortage to nursecorps. Nursecorps accepted the facility and now if the staff sign a 2 year contract they can get up to 85% of their nursing loan repaid. Nursecorps can also help nurses go back to school with some grants. This keeps the hospital from spending any money and helps attract nurses to this facility. I wanted to make brochures to new hires and promote it around the hospital so the nursing students can be enticed to sign a2 year contract. My professor says thats not enough and i need to do more or else i fail the semester. I feel like she is giving up on me and says "we offer this class next semester". Allnurses, I dont want to take this a class a 3rd time. Please help!! what am i missing? any ideas?

I'm a little confused by your intentions... PICO is a way to formulate research questions... how did you present it to your instructor already? that will give a starting point for others to assist you.

To formulate questions in Evidence Based Practice and use the PICOT format.

PICOT stands for:

  • Population/ Patient Problem: Who is your patient? (Disease or Health status, age, race, sex)
  • Intervention: What do you plan to do for the patient? (Specific tests, therapies, medications)
  • Comparison: What is the alternative to your plan? (ie. No treatment, different type of treatment, etc.)
  • Outcome: What outcome do you seek? (Less symptoms, no symptoms, full health, etc.)
  • Time: What is the time frame? (This element is not always included.)

Your PICOT question should fall under one of these types:

  • Therapy/Prevention
  • Diagnosis
  • Etiology
  • Prognosis

Start with a literature search on nurse retention (your population is employed nurses). Turnover (lack of retention) is the Problem. But you need to define your problem in terms of data, not your opinion... that's why you need the lit review. This will provide you with an enormous amount of information. Based on those references, put together a diagram of all the factors that have been shown to improve retention (solve the problem). From those factors, choose one or two that show up on multiple studies. Then, figure out how you would design an Intervention around those factors. It's probably OK just to extract ideas from the studies you've read, because this is a learning exercise & they don't expect any unique or original theory. BUT - DO NOT Plagiarize...

Does that help?
