PHSC 2015 Nursing Hopefuls

Published

Hey everyone!

I found one topic on this, but it wasn't very active, so I hope this one becomes a little more successful. My name is Jennifer, and I am applying for the January 2015 Nursing Program at PHSC. My home campus is Porter at Wiregrass Ranch. Are there any other 2015 hopefuls? I'd like to get to know you all! I am taking my TEAS next Tuesday and am so nervous. This will be my first time taking the TEAS. Have any of you taken it? How was it?

Any tips? I have finished all me pre-reqs and finished with a 3.6. Not too bad, wish I would have got higher! Hope I get in! Good luck to all you ladies!

Thanks!

The full time and part time affects those that have the Pell Grant. There is a major difference in the monies if you don't do full time

I just checked mine, it would be a $716.00 difference between 3/4 and full time.

Do they have to be white or can we get black? They have size 13 in black. I've worn that style of shoe before, and it is very comfortable (Plus no place for...stuff...to drip into). I think the velcro will keep them snug throughout the life of the sole.

They have to be all white but it has been said there could be a small colored line or mark on the side. They also allow an all white leather athletic shoe

Think the sole can be blk? Like this shoe.

This is what the nursing handbook has to say about the dress code.

Pages 22 & 23

Clinical Dress Code, Grooming Code, and Uniform Policies

With regard to clinical dress, students are required to wear the designated student uniform. This uniform helps not only to identify the wearer as a student from the college but also to distinguish him/her from other health care givers in clinical facilities. It is expected that the student will wear the uniform with pride as representatives of the college and will comply with the uniform policies noted below.

The complete student uniform is worn in all clinical settings unless indicated otherwise by clinical agency policy and/or the faculty. Faculty will advise students at the onset of each nursing course of the uniform policies of the clinical agencies to be used. Student uniforms are to be worn only for designated PHSC clinical experiences. The uniform should be representative of professional appearance in that it is clean and properly fitted. For observational experiences, the student may be asked to wear an optional observational experience uniform as noted below. A student uniform and/or lab coat will be considered incomplete if it is lacking the student photo ID and the PHSC patch emblem. These emblems are available in the campus bookstore. Failure to adhere to appropriate dress code will result in removal from the assigned clinical setting.

ADN Uniform Requirements

Women: Landau Top #8129 women’s V neck tunic – white with black and gold ribbon trim. White unisex pants (no jeans).

Men: Landau Top, #7489 V neck scrub top– white with black and gold ribbon trim. White unisex pants (no jeans). A plain white T-shirt may be worn under top.

Lab Coat: White, short or long sleeve, 3/4 or full-length coat. * Not required for the NUR 1021L (Fundamentals of Nursing) course.

The lab coat is worn in the hospital setting during the student-patient care assignment activity. It is not to be worn as a substitute for a sweater in the clinical setting. The lab coat may be worn by students during clinical orientation activities along with professional attire. Please check with your Clinical Instructor for clinical orientation requirements.

Photo ID: First initial, last name, Ex. “PHSC RN Student”. To be obtained from the library after add/drop date.

Patch Sewn on left front upper chest of uniform top and on the left sleeve of the lab coat.

Emblem:

(2) A student uniform and/or lab coat will be considered incomplete if it is lacking the student photo ID and the PHSC patch emblem. These emblems are available in the campus bookstore.

Shoes: White uniform shoes i.e., Nurse-Mate type shoes. NO sandals, tennis or platform shoes. Solid white leather athletic walking shoes are acceptable (except high tops, pumps, etc., that are sports oriented in appearance and function). Men: white socks. Women: white hose. White socks may be worn with pants only.

There may be additional uniform requirements that relate to a specific agency. The Student’s expected to adhere to both the PHSC and the clinical agency uniform requirements.

Accessories:

White or navy blue sweater NO pullover sweaters (optional), bandage scissors, wrist watch with sweep second hand, ball point pen, small pocket size notepad, and stethoscope.

Purses in the clinical area are discouraged. Waist fanny packs are NOT to be worn due to infection control concerns. Back/waist support belts may be worn for medical/back safety reasons, only if kept clean and in good repair.

Observational Experiences Dress Requirement

Student observational experiences require a dress code of black polo with PHSC logo (available in the College Bookstore) and khakis slacks.

When the student is at the clinical facility and not in uniform, professional attire is expected. Examples of clothing NOT to be worn are shorts, knickers, pedal pushers, harem pants, miniskirts, sweat pants, leggings, bicycle pants (Spandex), sandals, open toe shoes, clogs or sling back shoes.

Unless the teaching staff gets down to floor level to look at the 1/4" layer at the bottom of the shoes that is black (which it is going to be black after a week or two of wearing anyways), I'm thinking they should be ok. It isn't like the whole base of the shoe is black. Personally, since our colors are black and gold, I think the flashy black and gold option for the shoes should pass. Hang a sec...no...wife just saw them and said she would not let me get the black and gold because the 80's called and said they bought them all out.

LOL

When I read the previous threads it seemed like the instructors were a little lenient on the shoes. I saw a student at Oak Hill about a month ago and he had all types of markings on the side of his athletic shoes and the were the mesh style.

Anyone working as a CNA while going to school? What kind of hoops did you have to jump through to get certified/licensed?

Meltominoire and I were discussing this a couple of weeks ago. There is a place next to the scrub store on 19 in Spring Hill that does a quick certification for around 350.00. Normally CNA certification is fairly easy; however, in my opinion it's not worth the time or money. A CNA is usually paid around 8-9 an hour and normally employed through a nursing home. I know some people that make more than that at nursing homes and they are not CNAs. In the end it will not help you with the LPN or RN program at all. This info was told to me from previous CNAs that climbed the ladder from CNA to RN. As they said it is low pay for crap work... This of course is just my opinion based on family and friends personal stories.

Those that are currently working as a CNA, I give them tons of credit from the stories that I 've been told!

I'm looking for part-time work that pays decent and I can do around the school schedule. Apparently evening/weekend jobs are in short supply that pay at least $10/hr. Any suggestions around that?

The packets are have been sent to your emails!
