hey guys i have a few quick questions for all you out there. i just found out that i am going to be having a telephone job interview with a hospital down in tx on thursday. now i have no idea how this type of interview would go or what types of questions i should ask the person interviewing me. i come from canada so i know that things are very different.

i know i will ask about

1. pt/nurse ratio's

2. benefits

3. overtime ... is it mandatory

other then that i'm kind of lost. what else is kind of important to know or ask a potential employee (p.s. if i choose this hospital i will be placed into a 2 year contract so i don't know if that makes a difference in what i need to ask or find out)

thanks

dani

I always ask about two other things...because those other questions seem so self focused when you see it from managment.

I ask "generally speaking, how long have your nurses stayed at your facility?" (gets insight to turn over). And "what is your mission statement?" (gets into their key words!).

Now I normally ask those right away because that can help me set up for asking other questions or the agreeing game ya do in interviews using the KEY WORDS used in THEIR answers!!! ( oh yes, I am a team player all the way...yes I find continuity to be very important...yes flexibility is a valid point in any nursing job...etc...).

Good luck..I hate phone interviews..I loose that body language aspect I use often in nursing! But I have passed them no probelm!

Have you looked at their website to gather more information? Might help to formulate your questions.

Have you worked in the US before? You will want to know if the workforce is unionized, do you have a rotation(schedule)? what would it be like? are you sent home without pay if census is low? etc

I liked phone interviews as I could have all my questions written out and in front of me along with answers to questions I though they might ask me- helps when you have those momentary brain freezes "Give us an example of ..." etc.

Good luck although we need you at home too!

Danigirl, let's switch postions. You come here to LA and hop on over to TX, and I'll come to wherever you are in Canada, and I'll hop right on over to Toronto.

Good luck! I had a phone interview with a company in TO once. I think you'll have better luck than I did, though.

I have an interview/audition today (yes, audition), and I think I'll have to reschedule due to some personal issues.

ask about low census days and their float policy...is there orientation to other units, a rotating list of who's turn it is, etc.

hahahahah thats to funny :nuke: hummmmmmm not to sure which one would get the better deal out of that one

i hope that you do good in your interview/audition goes well (just want to point out putting that word in there would scare the dodo out of me

I once asked in an interview "What is your policy on succession planning?" I thought it was a brilliant, smart, intelligent question!

The blank looks gave me their answer!!! They hadn't a clue as to what I was talking about and succesion planning wasn't in place. Needless to say, had I been offered the job (I wasn't) I wouldn't have taken it...

I guess what I am saying is try not to outsmart those interviewing you

I had phone interviews too and really liked them as another poster said, you can have things written down and peak at them! I asked

"Does your charge nurse take an assignment?"

"Does a nurse with Prisma/CRRT (continuous dialysis) have a 1:1 assignment?"

"Do you self schedule?"

"Do you have care partners/nursing assistants on all shifts? How many?"

"What type of continuing education do you offer your nurses?"

Ask about sign on bonus and how long of a commitment you make when you receive it (FYI - sign on bonuses are HEAVILY taxed here...at least in NC where I am they are).

If you are interested in day shift, ask how long it takes a new person to get one.

Good luck,

PS where in TX? I lived in Fort Worth and worked for Baylor and did clinicals in Dallas/Fort Worth area.
