If you know what one of our local hospitals pay new grads, post it here!
I'll start: Jefferson and Methodist: 26$/hr base
Please add on!
Eileen,
I have hired a few new grads int he ER. I really think it depends on the person and the facility. The larger ER's can handle new grads better. You do need to know a lot about everything. It is the experience and critical thinking that takes a new grad longer. In the smaller facilities, where there are less nurses on a shift, I find it harder on the staff to mentor them and the new grads become more task oriented. I am not a firm believe in working med-surg first. I never did. The import thing to remember is studying does not stop after you get out of school.- erangel71

I agree with u .
ERAngel71,
I recently attempted to make the move from an oncology/organ transplant floor to an ER after three years and found that it would have been easier as a new grad. Now, many require you to start on nights and move to days as senior staff leave. Many times I have heard that I need ER experience...I am not sure how that is possible when I can't get in anywhere.
I have since decided that I am going to move to ICU instead :)

That is great to know! I am currently looking to apply for externships. It is so hard! Such a big decision! I have been a stay at home mom for so long, deciding where to work and praying I will like it is nervewracking!! LOL

Currently the GN start rate at Crozer-Chester Medical Center is 27.48 and the start rate is 28.42. This may be the highest in the area? Next summer they go to 28.58 and 29.56 respectively. Crozer is south of the city in Chester, near Widener University. Also, I've heard they may be looking to hire a few experienced nurses over the summer with a wage up to 34.88. They have a pretty strong nurse's union there.

Do you know which union represents nurses at Crozer?
Also, I know U Penn is a well-respected hospital -- however, is it a good place for a new grad to refine one's skills? Are preceptors helpful? Was orientation comprehensive?
I read the rates for Crozer Chester, which I the hospital that I am interested to work at when I graduate next year. There are two different rates 27 and 28 something. Does that mean you go up to the higher rate once you pass your boards. Also, does anybody know what the shift diff. is? Thanks
