  1. rndee81, I am working for the Penn Health System in the CTICU. The only thing is that I only have about 1 1/2 yrs of experience. I hear from different things from different ppl regarding experience. One of our anesthetists went to (and occasionally teaches at ) LaSalle and says to put my app in now. On the other hand I've heard other anesthetists say they keep seeing anesthettists with less than three years of experience, and they think anesthetists should have more experience. I'm taking grad. classes now and got an A in pathophys. and will be starting pharm next week, so I figure that will help. A guy I know from undergrad. was accepted to the Penn class starting 2009. I heard the news from a friend. Anyways, I figured if they accepted him with, really at that time, only a few months of experience then I shouldn't stress out about it.
  2. rndee81, I posted a q on the upenn interview process on another post you were involved with...but i noticed this one was more recent. I am getting ready to send everything in to upenn. Your story of the one lady interogating you for three hours is frightening. Are there any words of wisdom from your experience?
  3. I am a newe grad in a M/S ICU. I was just wondering how people organize their shifts. I am just trying to figure out how to manage two patients. I feel like I am running around half the day and rushing to get things done at t he end to give report. Thanks!
  4. I am a new grad in a MSICU and have to take the critical care PBDS. Has anybody else taken this? I am a little bit nervous about it, because I had to take the M/S PBDS, but they said the set-up is a little different this time (with the critical care PBDS). I was hoping somebody had some advice for what to look over or how to prepare myself for this. Thanks ahead of time.
  5. I just started as a new grad in a hospital that utilizes eICU - VISICU. It seems very interesting. They took all of the new nurses that are starting in the ICU to where the monitoring occurs for the hospital. The nurses seem to appreciate it and use it when needed. They also use it for monitoring correct some research purposes (HOB greater than 30 degrees, correct dressing techniques, etc.) I don't know if that was much of a help, but I don't really know much more else about it since I am also new at the facility.
  6. I am going to be moving to the Philly area. I was wondering about some safety issues for some of the hospitals. Does anybody have any information about Einstein in particular? Thanks in advance.
  7. I am currently a nursing student and graduating in May 07. I am looking and starting to apply to some hospitals in the Philadelphia area. Since I am not from the Philly area I have been talking to some nursing students who go to school in the Philly area, but have heard some mixed reviews on the hospitals. Among the hospitals I am interested in is Einstein. Can anybody give me any feedback on this hospital. Anything would be appreciated. You can also PM me about this. Thanks for anything you post!
  8. I am from the Wilkes-Barre area, but attend another nursing school. I know that the U. of Scranton has a good reputation. Somebody I know went there for nursing and really liked it. Sorry I can't give you much more information, but I do know that they have a good reputation.
  9. No problem, if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me, or I think on here it's called PM-ing. I am not sure about the specifics of how the girl I know did the whole Scranton transfer, but she was also a second degree student. I think basically she just did a transfer, but since it isnt specifically a second degree program she probably had to do any gen. ed. classes that Scranton wants to graduate. Also, I am interested in ultimately interested in becoming a CRNA. I'm not sure if you have goals to do this, or if you just added this in, but if you do here is some of the things that I have learned so far. I have had a wonderful opportunity to shadow some different CRNAs and talk to them, but I think the more opinions you get the better you off you will be. I even had the chance to talk to some of the directors of the new CRNA program at York and get their insight about what to do. Most of their advice was to keep my grades up, which are excellent currently, and to make sure I do well on my GREs. One thing that I didn't realize is to use precaution about the people you choose to do recommendations. I would think that getting a recommendation wouldn't be a problem at all and that all would be stellar, but they said that it isn't so. I can talk with you otherwise about other specifics just about choosing a program. Overall what they had told me is good advice to not only applying to a CRNA program just just grad. schools in general.
  10. I graduated from Wilkes Univ with my B.S. and decided to go into nursing, but chose not to do so at Wilkes. I am attending a second degree program at Misericorida. I have ran into a few second degree generic MSN program students when I have been at clinicals and they have said that they feel very rushed and just hope that they can get a grasp on everything as a whole by graduation. Personally, from what I have seen one of the best nursing schools in the area, as far as a BSN degree goes, is Scranton. Miseri has been trying to sort out some of their problems as far as faculty goes (profs leaving, etc) and they are doing as best of a job that they can, but I think my class has suffered due to this. I have learned alot while I have been there, and I know that these problems occur at many schools, but I think there have been some extraordinary circumstances lately at Miseri. I would recommend Miseri with slight precaution, but still recommend it. I know a RN who just graduated from Scranton and has all good things to say about Scranton. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
  11. I am from the Harrisburg area but go to nursing school in NEPA. Many of the nurses I have worked with or ran into have at some time worked in the Philly area. I have heard that most of the hospitals are good to work for in the Philly area, but the burn out rate is high. (This is why they had left) Of course most of the nurses I spoken with are from the ED or ICU areas. The only hospital that I have heard to be cautious with is Christiana Healthcare in DE.
  12. I read the rates for Crozer Chester, which I the hospital that I am interested to work at when I graduate next year. There are two different rates 27 and 28 something. Does that mean you go up to the higher rate once you pass your boards. Also, does anybody know what the shift diff. is? Thanks
  13. Thanks for everyone who is responding. I think my retaking the biochem is to get accepted to CRNA school. I am hoping that they won't just throw my app aside if they see that I only got a 2.0 in my biochem, and at least interview me to give me a chance when I apply. I was thinking about taking it next semester, which wouldnt cost me more money, just more time.
  14. Hi everyone! I am going to be a senior nursing student this fall. This is my second degree, I have a previous bacehlors in psychology. I work in a MSICU and love it! I have shadowed a CRNA and am really ineterested in being a CRNA. Anywyas, I am brand new to this site. I have read over other people's questions and answers, but still have some questions of my own. In my previous degree I didn't do so well in some of my chemistry courses and am wondering if I should retake them. I guess you could say, that I am more focused on my classes now. I am doing very well in nursing school, but my previous GPA isn't as hot, especially in my sciences. I know this may be a problem for me, but I hoping to get over this hurdle. Would you recommend retaking some chemistry classes and taking other bio classes that I haven't taken? Or, would you recommend to take master's degree classes upon graduation to prove myself?
