Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone has applied to the Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in NYC for the coming year? I am looking to get into their part-time evening program that would begin in Spring 2011. I'm taking the NLN this Wed and really nervous about it, really just the verbal part....
Congratulations to all of those people that got accepted! Hopefully I will run into you guys in the hallway at school. Currently, I am in the ATOP program and in NUR 103 - Psych. I just wanted to respond to some questions that some of you had.
1. CLEP exam - I, too, have to CLEP out of Micro and that is done through Excelsior. I have to have it done before the start of this coming Fall semester. You just need a C to transfer into PBSIN. You sign up with Excelsior and you have about 6 months to take the exam. It is taken at a Prentice Hall Testing site and you get your grades right away. Also, they provide practice exams for $65.
2. Admission Committee - When I went through the process last year, there were only 3 people that did interviews - BS, JM, and a nurse recruiter - They were NOT on the admission committee but rather advocates for those individuals they believe will be a great nurse, asset to the school, and can handle the intense and grueling program. Basically, they plea your case before the committee.
3. Microbiology - It is recommended that you take Micro before entering the program because it is tough to take Micro and NUR 103 - Psych during the summer session (ATOP program). Trust me, some of my classmates are having a hard time right now with taking 2 courses during this summer. The Micro schedule is not set up for ATOP, so you end up going to school for Psych and Micro and that can be 4-5 days out of the week. Also, Prof E is the only Micro/A&P professor and she is TOUGH. She teaches her class as if it is a medical school.
4. Ethic Online Course - I followed JM instruction and took the course online the summer prior to my first semester at PBISN. I recommend Fingerlake Community - my friend to it there and said it was easy and not too much or hard assignments. I, however, couldn't get into Fingerlakes because the class was full and ended up taking it online at Monroe Community. I learned alot but it was INTENSE and very busy work throughout the entire summer. There were always something due and i was stress
I hope that helps you guys! Good luck for those in the waiting game.
Lol, anashenwrath! That's ok. You will do fine. If you still have your books look over them. Sociology won't be difficult. Just refresh your memory about some of the main contributors (I can't remember their names either) Marx is one, remembered that one, lol. If not go to the library and check out some books on micro and a&p.
This is all so exciting. I just can't wait until WE officially know whether WE are accepted or not.
Jsinyc,
Thanks so much for the info! I am going to look into fingerlakes college. If not I'll look around since you said monroe was really intense. I have 3 children and because they are off for the summer I don't want to bombard myself and them not enjoy their time off from school. Thanks again! You have been a great help!
@JSI: wow, thanks for all the info! 6 months, eh? That's not a lot of time. Do you know what the tests are like? I'll pick up the study guides asap. For sociology, I'm going in kind of blind; I'm not quite sure why they're letting me CLEP it, but I'm definitely NOT looking a gift horse in the mouth!
Hehe, I'm from Monroe County originally (Rochester, NY), and actually took classes there during the summer of my undergraduate! I'm doing Dev Psych through Herkimer starting 5/24... here's hoping it doesn't drain me!
@Jay: hope you enjoyed your wine reward and are having a relaxing saturday! thanks for the encouraging words, and yes, we definitely have an exciting "hurry up and wait" ahead of us!
Congratulations jayzelena!!! It sounds like you did great. You're in - I just know it!
Does anyone know what courses you have to take the CLEP? I recieved my transfer eval and it says they offer CLEP for Gen. Bio, Gen. Chem, College Comp, Intro to Psych & Intro to Soc. For these courses it just says you need a "C" or better but it doesn't list a time frame. For the science courses they said you need to take the challende exam if the courses are more than 5 years old. Do you have to the CLEP for the nonscience courses? It doesn't give a timeframe - it just lists that they offer those CLEP tests through The College Level Board.
I think nonscience is transferrable from whenever as long as you took the right course. I was even told my Shakespeare class counted for English (and I def took that over 5 years ago). Science courses need to be 5 years or less: A&P I and II, micro, and (I think) nutrition.
Best bet is to arrange a quick meeting with MG, so she can tell you exactly what you need. It's so confusing! Lol!
As for the timeframe, everything had to be done 3 weeks before the start of your semester, and jsinyc just informed us that you take the excelsior clep exams within 6 months. Oy!
