Soma. that is a muscle relaxer right? That I can see.....I was on flexeril and told I had to be on it a limited time due to possible dependency and addiction. I cannot imagine using that stuff regularly.....it made me sick!

Flexeril doesn't do anything for me, but Soma makes me loopy and sick. I can't imagine being addicted. I have a friend who is a pharmacist, and she says she has dealt with people who pop 10 or more Soma a day. I can't imagine!

Like I said, learn something new......

What is one man's poison is another's prize, I guess????

simply weird what people do.

Prednisone??? wow. I learn something new everyday. I guess I need to think outside the box here......see how ignorant I am.

You're not ignorant!

Of course I wasn't drug seeking prednisone, and I'd like to think no one else would either! I just got an idiot resident would couldn't hear my very audible, no stethoscope required, wheezing.

Why would people even want prednisone? Well, I guess it can kind of wire a person.....

Your guys have given me a lot of insite into what to watch for with "what Rx seekers are looking for" I have been in home health care for 1 pt. my entire time as an LPN. I don't get much experience except with my own children's problems or I learn more everyday about all of my diagnosis and my childrens. This has been very insiteful to me. Thanks for the info.

The drug seekers on my unit Really like IV push Benadryl. There is one in particular that will cuss you out if you dilute the Benadryl in NS. They want it in the closest IV port pushed over seconds. They really love IV Zofran and Phenergan.

wait, the pH of Pheregan is 2.2, or the pKa is 2.2? How can a molecule have a pH by itself. Is it in a standard solution?

(Deb does make a good point - just because something can be done safely, if a significant proportion of caregivers aren't, then it's a good reason to remove that as an option for patient safety's sake.)

Specializes in floor to ICU.

we had an inservice on legal issues. the nurse (who was also a lawyer) says she HATES phenergan- too many lawsuits involved with vein damage/phlebitis, etc...

...BTW, doesn't it drive you crazy when co-workers call it "phenerGRAN, instead of phenerGAN"... :)

Darn! I miss all the fun.

They gave me a MS PCA after my hysterectomy, but all it did was make me very sleepy. Felt really good after the sleep, though...like I'd been on vacation. But I actually think I liked the SCD's better (all the way up on both legs.) And since I had an IV, the SCDs, a pulse ox...I was just as happy to have a foley (and my bowels were asleep)...I didn't want to deal with getting in and out of all those contraptions anyway. I guess I'm strange...

For my cataract operation they gave me fentanyl and versed. The only way I could tell they actually gave me something was because my blood pressure dropped. Wasn't sleepy; wasn't tired. Went home and continued my day as usual...Although what was really funny about that operation... When they put the lens in, I could see the coils in the light they had me looking at. But at first I was concerned because everything seemed a bit darker than it should be. Turns out I was looking through the surgical drape! :)

Another drug with abuse potential (I've heard with athletes, at least) is modafinal (sp). Non-amphetimine amphetimine-like drug. Only FDA approved use is narcolepsy. Also costs $5/pill! Yikes! Rx drugs at street drug prices!

I have never read anything that suggests the potential for addiction, but I have a home patient who prefers Phenergan to her Avinza.....and get lots of requests for it in home care. I guess there are worse things to ask for:) .

Above poster mentioned Prednisone. That reminded me - one pt kept coming in needing his inhaler refilled ahead of time. He would use one inhaler in just a few days time. I finally asked him (point blank) "What are you doing with your inhalers? He finally confessed that when he was using cocaine (tested positive in drug screen - he knew we knew), the inhalers would make the crack high last longer.

I was talking to the MD about this, she said she had had 2 or 3 other pts that were doing the same thing.

Who would of thunk it? :uhoh3:
