PHCC Fall 2014 hopefuls!

Published

I want to meet some of you! I'm just getting ready to take my last 3 finals, have been studying for the TEAS for months now, and will be able to apply for next fall's nursing program (YAYAY!) I'd love to hear from some potential future classmates, how you are doing/ did with pre-reqs/ TEAS, and share the excitement upon acceptances!

I applied to the LPN to RN bridge program and haven't received anything yet. My pre req gpa is 3.0 and teas a 71. Im really not hopefully of getting in.

Thanks for the info MamaBerry. At least it's something even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear :( oh well, I guess I'll just stop obsessing and wait until the first week of July. Seems so far away :(

Let's start a countdown?? 14 days!!

Welcome to the anxious wait, Angie82!

It all depends on the pool, but I have heard that the Spring session is easier to get into since not as many apply. If this time doesn't work out, are there any classes you could retake next semester that would boost your GPA? And, maybe take another shot at the TEAS? Your scores aren't bad, but the higher the better - obviously.

I am considering retaking a Psych class and the TEAS a second time if this time fails. Will apply again for Spring. Just throwing options your way while we all pass the next couple anxious weeks so very s-l-o-w-l-y... sigh

Yes a countdown sounds good!

MamaBerry, I wanted to let you know that if you don't get in (which you will!!!!!) and you want to apply to Spring 2015 AND retake any classes, that you'll have to go to an advisor and fill out an appeal form. Spring applications end in September so you'd have to retake a class this summer for it to count for spring and the second summer session starts next week!

As you know, spring semester is wayyyy less competitive though. I saw someone get in last spring with a 77 ranking score so we should both be in if we don't get in this fall (which again, we will!!!)

And Angie82! Don't be so down on yourself! You still have a great chance of getting in :)

ScarletJones,

After you get in, try to get the NCLEX app, very interesting!

I am also planning to take Spanish next summer! I'll have no other classes, will finish the AA this year and have taken all the co-reqs of RN.

To your question as to where I come from: I am from Iran, but before ending up here in FL 2.5 years ago, I travelled a lot together with my husband since we both were freelance engineers working for the European companies building large industrial plants in different countries. I've been to almost 40 countries. Persian is my first language, German is 2nd and English is 3rd. I understand some Arabic and a little Russian.

After you get your acceptance, we'll go for coffee!

Wow, such an interesting background! It must have been so exciting being able to visit so many different places...The only country I've ever traveled to is Greece (and mexico on a cruise but that doesnt really count).

What made you switch careers? You can message me if you'd rather, or not answer at all - I know I'm being nosey.

I actually have the NCLEX app on my phone :)

Thank you for the info regarding books. I really do wonder if there is a difference between the 7th&8th edition. Most of the times they just change pictures/diagrams and then call them a new edition. The 7th edition is selling for $15!

Hi Angie- Welcome to the group! Good luck, hope you get an acceptance letter. Dont be so hard on yourself :)

Just to quench everyone's thirst for 'knowing'... I just spoke to the admissions specialist in charge of sending out the letters for the programs (for another reason). Her words are that she is "anticipating hearing from the committee so that she can start sending out the letters and have them out by the first week of July". I'm taking that as she doesn't have the info yet so don't expect any letters this week. Sorry I don't have more exciting news, but I guess anticipate a little bit of a further wait.

Just to pick apart this post a little - does that mean the committee met?

Lol Scarlet I was wondering the same thing but was too scared to ask. I tend to over analyze everything! I hope they met already. This is the third week of June!

Ha! :D Like I said, great minds and all that jazz...

and just to answer my own post regarding the 7th and 8th edition - I found this tidbit of info:

What is the difference between 7th and 8th Edition?

  • Building Competency boxes help you apply QSEN (Quality & Safety Education for Nurses).
  • Expanded Evidence-Based Practice boxes highlight the importance of current clinical research in daily practice.
  • Clinical Application questions test your understanding of clinical practices.
  • Skill guidelines for blood glucose monitoring help you ensure accurate readings when performing this common skill.
  • Content on violence, genetics/genomics, compassion fatigue, bullying, and the accreditation process addresses current concerns in nursing practice.

more

Key differences between 8th and 7th editions

  • Time lapse between current and previous publications: 4 years (2012 vs 2008).
  • Potter & Perry Fundamentals of Nursing was first published in 1985.
  • Chapter 41 "Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Balance" has been completely rewritten for better understanding of a complex topic.
  • New progressive case study follows the same patient through each of the Nursing Process chapters (Chapters 16-20). This brings to life the framework of the process moving from Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.
  • Additional 250 new Review Questions.
  • In the Eighth Edition the word "Client" has been replaced with the word "Patient".
  • New Skill 43-1 "Patient-Controlled Analgesia" in the chapter 43 on Pain Management.
  • New Skill 44-4 "Blood Glucose Monitoring" in the chapter 44 on Nutrition.
  • Building Competency boxes help you apply QSEN (Quality & Safety Education for Nurses) competencies to realistic clinical situations.
  • Expanded Evidence-Based Practice boxes highlight the importance of current clinical research in daily practice.
  • Case studies in all clinical chapters allow you to practice using care plans and concept maps to perform clinical application exercises.
  • Skill guidelines for blood glucose monitoring help you ensure accurate readings.
  • Content on violence, genetics/genomics, compassion fatigue, bullying, and the accreditation process addresses current concerns in nursing practice.
  • Three comprehensive fundamentals practice exams and a calculations tutorial on the companion Evolve website.
  • More than 100 new illustrations clarify procedures and familiarize students with the latest clinical equipment.

So I guess maybe not a good idea to get the 7th edition

Just to pick apart this post a little - does that mean the committee met?

I actually thought the same thing :) Ok, so since we are all on the same page, this is how it went:

Conversation coming to a close about my records, she asks:

"Is there anything else I can help you with before I transfer you?"

Me: "Nope, I'm good! Unless you can tell me when the committee is meeting?" (laughingly)

Her: "Well, I'm... I do know that I am anticipating hearing from the committee. I am in charge of sending out the letters to the applicants, and I am anticipating hearing that information from them so that I can start putting those letters together to send them out so that you have them by the first week of July! If you don't have them by then, please feel free to give me a call, I'd be happy to help!"

Me: "Thank you so much!"

So... MY personal analysis was not that they had to meet still, but that they have met and are going to be giving her the information for her to put together and mail out?? So, maybe she puts the letters together and starts mailing by end of week? Of course, I read into a lot, but why word it that you are expecting to hear from the committee if they haven't even met yet? ;)

Excited!! But, keeping my anticipation at bay too so I don't get disappointed.
