Petitioning for DCCC 2014 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Peace Everyone! I am currently a Pre-Nursing student at Delaware County Community College. I take my TEAS test July 30. I've been studying on and off since last month. I am trying not to be nervous about it. I'm beyond determined to get in! Is there anyone else who has taken the TEAS yet? what scores are considered good enough to get in?? My GPA is fine, and I will be complete all my pre reqs by next Spring. What scores would be considered TEAS test "Waiting List" scores?

Hi all,

I took the Teas this summer. Got a 72 overall. Break down is as follows

71.4% in reading

66.7% in science

76.7% English

76.7% in math

Overall I met (and mostly surpassed) the minimum requirements

My program rank was high on everything but reading (usually my strongest subject, I felt that section was much harder than it needed to be)

Do you think is is enough to get me a spot immediately? Or even high on the waiting list?

I turned in my petition to Chester County. My GPA is great and I have most of my Pre-Reqs done as I already completed a BA and MA. Please give me some insight.

Hello- good job! I honestly hand no clue what will get in. I'm also nervous as anything! I hate the unknown. The director of admissions told me people do get 100%'s but that test was pretty hard for people to score that high!

I hope your grades are good enough to get in!!

Yeah she told is that too, but it was oh for reading. I think my reading may bump me down, but my math and my English might play a part in me getting a spot. How did you do??? I hope you get in!

*us, *only I found the reading section to be difficult, and usually that is my strongest skill set. The ATI book did nothing to prepare me for science and I studied for WEEKS. Took a class, and did about 15 practice tests in which I scored 75-90's for each section. I've heard of people getting 60's and still being placed. They were like #4 on the waiting list:

Don't be worries, at this point it's put of our hands. I'm just trying to focus on my anatomy II class to take my mind off of it.

Worse comes to worse ill do CNA and then try again at the nursing program.

As a DCCC nursing grad, I wish all of you the best of luck with your applications. From what I can see, the admissions process has changed for the better - the TEAS test is more comprehensive than the NET that DCCC used to use and I also believe that they also factor in your GPA now, where in the past it was just your NET score.

Having said that, I'd also urge you to make absolutely sure that nursing is what you want. I say this not because the program is inordinately difficult (it's not) but because ADN's are having a very rough time in the nursing job market, and that's not going to change any time soon. In the not-too-distant past, the program was well respected and DCCC grads were highly sought after. The program is still great but hospital attitudes regarding ADN nurses have changed radically. Where most DCCC grads worked in hospitals after passing the NCLEX, the majority now have to be content with LTC. There are multiple reasons for this.

Perhaps the biggest reason is that there are now far too many nurses chasing far fewer nursing jobs in the Phila area. In rough numbers, there are about 200 new nursing positions created each year while there are over 2,000 new grads passing the NCLEX. Every nursing program in the area has increased their enrollment (and there are about 25 programs in the area, not counting those in DE or NJ), and so the number of new grads entering the job market also continues to increase. At the same time, older nurses are not leaving the work force - some because their retirement savings were decimated in the recession, some because their spouse lost a job and some because they realize that they don't have enough saved for retirement.

I'm not trying to scare anyone from pursuing nursing, but do want to make sure you know what you're in for. If you do decide to become a nurse, I strongly advise getting a job at a hospital as a PCT or aide prior to enrolling (or soon afterward) in the DCCC program. This will maximize your chance of getting hired when you graduate - and is fast becoming the only reasonably secure route to a hospital nursing job for ADN's. Keep in mind that you will qualify to sit for the CNA exam after you complete your first semester of nursing - this could be the route to that hospital job. And seriously consider getting your BSN as soon as possible after graduating from DCCC. The college has articulation agreements with WCU and (I think) Temple, so the transition to the BSN is not too difficult.

Again, best of luck to you all.

Hey Chels! Please do not fret, as anxiety makes everything worse. Try to stay positive:-) I was nervous, stressed and anxious at first too, but I realized that the Lord would not have brought me this far to let me down. If nursing is really what you love and want to pursue, by all means it will happen! You have to put your faith in God. I pray on it everyday. Believe it or not, you (and I) are blessed for even passing ALL four sections! That's half the battle. Everything will be okay:-)

Indeed we are blessed. I was just happy to pass all 4 on the first try, I feel that a lot of people will struggle with that. I am also unwilling to take it again in case I don't get in. I want to be able to do CNA and take the test again, or simply re apply and have those two other chances to score higher.

Please PM me and let me know once you find out!!!!

Pls let me say this "congrat". You are in already as far as u meet the minimum requirement. I am a dccc student but I want to transfer and am still thinking of doing the teas..by friday I will make a decision on whether to take it

There is no way the average last year was an 88. I think that 80 is a VERY solid score, and 75 will be a likely acceptance. If you got an 86, you can probably relax, because that is AWESOME!!! Congratulations! I'm in my first semester of the program now. It's pretty intense, but pretty cool, too.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I saw all your messages, I cannot take the TEAS again unfortunate. The deadline for petitions is the 25th, and I was going to take it again but a back problem and A&P 2 took priority. I did e-mail Nancy a few times before and after I petitioned (once about my scores LOL) and she's been so sweet. I also spoke to the admissions office director for a long time at CCH because when I dropped off my petition she was not in office. We got to know each other better and I was able to tell her a lot my pre-reqs are done because of my BA and MA. I'm hopeful, but either way I'll be excited. I love the people in the program. Very different than the attitude I received at some other local institutions. That is all I will say about that...Lol.

Thank you for the support and replies to all my needy posts! Lmao

Ugh sorry for all the spelling issues. Posting from my phone :)

I just dropped off my final petition documents today! So nervous! I am taking the TEAS again tomorrow. I scheduled it before I took it the first time just in case I needed it. I am going to to try it again and hope to bump it up a bit, but honestly I haven't studied much since the last time I took it so not very likely.

I scored a 93 in Reading and an 83 overall. Applying for Chester County Night/Weekend. The paper works says I'm in the 98% for reading and 92% overall. I hope this gets me in!

This is going to be a loooong wait! Best of luck to everyone!!
