Perineal anxiety

Published

I don't mind giving bed baths, wound care, dressing, etc at all.. But when it comes to male perineal care, I hestitate. And I dont mean just washing around the member, its the pulling back of the foreskin and cleaning I can't allways do.:imbar Any one know to overcome this anxiety?

A friend of mine worked as an aide while in NS and told me he was advised by a peer with military experience to "choke it like a chicken."

really...

interesting.

i wonder why the cilac method is recommended?

Will you own up to the resulting UTI or is that too much for you too?

Come on now, its only a member. If you aren't going to do your job properly, why are you doing it at all?

cause I work in the ER, that's why. Now don't everyone get their feathers in a ruffle cause I wrote that. If I have an admit hold and their junk is nasty, then I will address that if I have time, otherwise an aide will likely jump in and assist.

Otherwise, if it's an emergency and they need a foley quickly, I can accomodate that. Later on down the road, if that patient is still in the ER and I remember to do a bedbath (:chuckle) then I'll get to that.

now a male resulting with a UTI from smegma (shmegma?) is quite unlikely anyhoo. :twocents:

It's funny. I remember clearly that I was quite the fan of lady partss in my pre-nursing life, but these days the occassional member is kind of a relief.

I'm sure glad I don't feel threatened by this. Really I don't.

ha! :chuckle That's pretty funny - and if there were the option to catheterize male or female, undoubtably most would choose male.... can I get an AMEN on that one?

You're telling me......

I've seen so many bulging perineums in the delivery room, it's nice to have a break once in a while....

I interpreted the advice to mean not to be afraid to touch it. Not to literally choke the life out of it. Like many other skills, if you approach it too gingerly, you won't be effective. (Old news to you, I'm sure, but something a newbie, and a male at that, had to learn the hard way.)

I'm going to be way more nervous with female perineal care. I have much less experience with them and where what is

Female peri-care is weird because I wonder if they are really ok with it but not saying anything. Especially if you have to really get in there to clean.

Male peri-care is just all out weird. I'll do it but even after 8 years it just feels so unnatural. Of course, I am quite sure the patients are WAYYYYY more uncomfortable than I am. :chuckle:chuckle:chuckle

By the way, not sure if 'Choking it like a Chicken' was a joke or not, but that really refers to a lone sexual activity. Never ever heard it used as anything else, even in the military. I almost choked when I read that...

I think your friend got hoodwinked...

I'm pretty confident my friend wasn't suggesting sexual contact, lone or otherwise. Can't really say what the fellow who told him had in mind. We took it to mean, put on your gloves, get over yourself, and do what needs to be done--within reason, of course.

You probably will, at first. Then again, that level of intimacy with a relative stranger of either gender seems a little unnatural. It's true, too, than women are a bit more anatomically complicated, in some respects. Catheter placement can be tricky, even after you've done a few. But, to me, what's most surprising is how much of a problem it isn't, most of the time. Like a lot of things, it isn't really as scary as it sounds.
