Penn Valley Nursing 2015

Published

I thought I should start a separate thread for those of us applying for the August 2015 start date. I mailed my application on Tuesday hopefully it reached the office today. Does anyone know if they still send out letters notifying you with how many points you received? If so when are they generally mailed out?

Did you check your student email lubdub?

Did you check your student email lubdub?

I did, the last email I got from them was for enrollment. Anyone else not get the email besides me?

Specializes in CICU.

I got mine with the orientation date as well, but It only has me enrolled in just the fundamentals, not the essentials class.. I wonder how long it will take financial aid to get our fall stuff done

I was wondering that too, Josh. It looks like I have to apply for a loan depending on how much books cost. I hope we can find out how much our books will cost soon.

I would highly recommend buying your books off of amazon as soon as you can. (well not as soon as you can but you know what I mean :) )

If you buy from the bookstore, you will pay them an arm and a leg. Have you tried looking up your class on the online MCCKC bookstore to see what books are required / optional? I did that and just bought 90% of my books off amazon and saved so much more money and at the time I'm not sure if amazon still does it or not but if you signed up for a credit card at the time they gave you a free $50-$75 to spend on whatever you want, which bought most of my books.

I'll try and post my ISBN numbers from first semester as well, doubt much has changed though. But be sure to not sell your books each semester as well, because they will be used again in further semesters.

If you could post the ISBN's that would great! Little_bear

@Little_bear2013 did you have to purchase a lab bag or supply bag at orientation? I notice some schools require it I wasn't sure about Penn Valley.

PV does require one

Has everyone been enrolled into both classes? Still only showing mine as not being enrolled in the essentials class

I'm enrolled in both classes. I would email N J to find out what's going on there were 3 spots left. I know that the class a semester ahead of us is still having issues getting enrolled as well.

Sorry haven't been on much lately.

As part of your tuition PV is suppose to supply a supply / lab bag that comes with all your first semester check off gear including the Foley kit, syringes, sterile gloves, etc. We were suppose to get ours in the first semester but we didn't end up getting ours until the 2nd semester started, but hopefully they've taken care of this by now.

EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention, if I recall we had to go pay the bookstore and show the check off instructor that we purchased it but financial aide I think covers this cost as well if you have leftover aide.

I'll post the ISBN numbers here shortly as well.

I don't have all the books on me right now but here's a few we used...Also as for the supply bag, it won't carry many books FYI :p.

Fundamentals of Nursing The Art and Science of Nursing Care 7th edition by Taylor Lillis Lemone Lynn

ISBN-13: 978-0-7817-9383-4

ISBN-10: 0-7817-9383

Nurses Handbook of Health Assessment 7th Edition by Janet R. Weber

ISBN page fell off, so can't find it but honestly did not use this book until second semester in OBGYN but only used it for one assignment.

Nursing 2013 Drug Handbook by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. You may require the 2014 or 2015 one now but doubt there's many differences, you WILL use this book every semester especially while making drug cards.

ISBN-13: 978-1-4511-5023-0

ISBN-10: 1-4511-5023-7

Nursing Diagnosis Handbook by Betty J. Ackley and Gail B Ladwig

ISBN: 978-0-323-07150-5

I know there's newer versions with more NANDA's and some use this book while others don't but it's been super helpful to me, especially with concept maps and care plans.

Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing by Janice L.Hinkle and Kerry H. Cheever 13th edition Volume 1 & Volume 2.

ISBN-13: 978-1-4511-4666-0

ISBN-10: 1-4511-4666-3

A lot of instructors recommend buying the 12th edition, as they teach mostly out of that one and it's better carrying around one large one than 2 large separate ones. Honestly tough I didn't buy it until the second semester and never used it until the 3rd semester but still didn't use it that much either. It's very helpful though for your pathophysiology papers.

I know there's a medical terminology book as well that's required and I would buy it or at least borrow one from someone because you will need it for the first few tests in concepts and even for the medical term final. Also, I know there's a concept map care plan book they say they require as well but honestly I've never used it and found it pretty confusing to use but it's helped some students out. Lastly I know there's a book called Calculate with Confidence that they said they required the last few semesters but first semester we didn't require it and I never bought it and I still did fine on metrology but if math isn't your strong subject, the instructors really recommend buying this book. I know there's one or two more but the ones I've listed are the major ones.

I'll try to find those books and post them as well sometime later this week for everyone as well.
