Penn State Residency: Hershey Medical Center 2015

Published

Hey Everyone,

I don't see a thread for 2015 yet, so I thought I'd start one. I'm just beginning the application process, and the clinical narrative is killing me. I precepted in trauma at a trauma center, so it was get them in, get them out: usually to a rehab. I can't think of how I might have changed their lives or had a big impact. I was able to attain great skills and do frequent assessments: neuro, neurovascular, cardio, telemetry strips, etc. and do and see some great stuff, I wish I could write about that!

I'd like to hear from anyone applying now or who applied in the past. Any pointers?

Is any of you guys applying for other hospital jobs or you're just waiting for the outcome from the residency program/s?? I have been trying to apply to other places as well but my priority is the residency programs at Hersey and in NC. Am just staying hopeful....

I don't have license yet so only apply for pens state residency cos of feb 15 starts.

I've applied to about 60 jobs at this point, including 9 or 10 residencies. At this point I'm only applying at hospitals, not LTC or skilled nursing. If I can't get a position by November I'll apply there as well. It's rough out there if you don't know someone. I thought the BSN would open more hospital doors than this.

NewYorkerGirl, you're absolutely right. It is not easy. I only have an associates in Nursing but will be graduating with my BSN this December. I have applied to a few hospitals but not as many as you. I don't how far you're willing to relocate but did you try UHS Binghamton General Hospital. They do have openings for new grads as well. I wish you the best in your search.

Ozzy84, that's a good head start. I wish you well too.

I've applied from coast to coast, literally! Seattle to PA! I've considered Binghamton in the past, but I'm really focused on trying to get into residencies. Thanks for the suggestion, it's a possibility.

I feel everyone's pain with the hospital application process, over the summer I applied to 100+ acute care jobs in PA (some were new grad residencies) and only got as far as a first interview for ONE. I knew I wanted to specialize in pediatrics so I wound up taking a LTC peds trach/vent job in the meantime but my ultimate dream would be to work at Hershey, they have an amazingchildren's hospital! Good luck to everyone in your searches!

Its just unbelievable how long one has to wait to get a nursing job. Not only doesn't one hear from the recruiters but it takes sometime to fill out those applications...It certainly is not an easy start for everyone but hope we all get to be where we desire to be.

True, and everyone wants an essay, and they're all on different topics! I've spent hours on essays for these residencies. I wish they'd ask for an essay later, if they're actually interested in me, so I don't waste my time. Same thing with references, I feel so bad asking my professors again and again to fill out these forms. I really do appreciate the residencies that state they'll ask for references at the end!

Yeah some of them don't ask references at the begging. Some of them just asked their email and phones. At least we don't ask our references to write a letter. Penn state sent only a survey which was easy.

I sent same cover letter 3 different place that I wrote for pen state. The other hospitals I applied was magnet hospitals so I kept that part ;)

I have been working with my university's career services because I wanted to get out in front of this job search. it was suggested that I write personalized cover letters and resumes for each hospital and each position that I apply to, incorporating key words from the job description. I just figured I'd share what I found because I was surprised by that!
