PBCC-palm beach comm. college

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of study for the nurse Procalc and the NLN entrance exam for PBCC fall nursing program.

I read on line that this school works on a point system

I was wondering if anyone who has been accepted to the program

(past/Present) student: HOW MANY POINTS DID YOU HAVE TO

WHEN ACCEPTED TO THE PROGRAM.

Anyone with info about the program, would be helpful.

Thanks

Any advice on how to survive first semester from anyone in the higher semesters? It just seems so disorganized to me. It almost feels to me like this is the first semester nursing school is being offered at PBCC. At first I thought it was just me feeling this way until I spoke to some of my other classmates. I was just wondering if it is going to get better in the later semesters. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im 2nd semester at belle glade, dont know if I can help you but, what problems are you exactly having

I have the same questions as navygrl. I had heard so many good things about PBCC nursing before I enrolled. Now I'm wondering what the hype was about.

Where do I begin? It's not the volume of work that's the big stressor. The program is just poorly structured, in general. In a previous post, JustinTJ described the program as "disorganized." He wasn't joking, and I haven't talked to ANYONE who feels differently.

Everyone I've spoken to feels as if they're flying by the seat of their pants, basically. Instructors are very knowledgable about the subject they teach, but not about the program in which they're involved. For example, my clinical group was informed this week that we would be doing something called "simulation" at the beginning of October. None of us had heard of "simulation" and our clinical structure couldn't provide an explanation of what it was.

As for clinicals? Maybe it's just my group, but it feels like we've been thrown to the wolves. There's no structure. I haven't even had any contact with an RN. Just LPNs and CNAs.

Nursing 1? It's a waste of time to even have class. It's a complete "learn on your own" kind of thing, there's no teaching. They should just eliminate the class and have students read the book and take the tests.

IPR reports were briefly explained the second day of the program. After that, nothing. A sample of a completed one would've helped, considering it doesn't count if the format is incorrect.

I could go on and on, but it's just lots of little things that add up, and it all goes back to the actual structure of the program. There's lots of incongruencies, inaccuracies, and poor planning on the part of the faculty. Alot of us thought the first few weeks were designed to be confusing as sort of a "weed out" to get uncommitted people to drop out. We were wrong; that's just the way things are, period.

Nursing is serious, life-or death business. The least faculty can do is have it together so students aren't distracted by a bunch of suprises and incongruencies along the way.

So now that I've aired my dirty laundry, how am I doing in the program? Excellent. I like the instructors and my classmates. But do I envision, at this point, like I will be adequately prepared to go on to 2nd semester? No.

Anyone started on the Well Elder paper? Have you found your 65+, non-family member who doesn't live in a nursing facility that you can trust and is willing to commit to six 1hr interviews over a 6 week period?

Wow guys, sorry to hear that....

There was a little disorganization with us at belle glade but, not as bad as you make it sound at Lake Worth. We did have slight issues with the IPR. They are a pain, I dread when I have to do mine this semester.

Are you not able to use someone for your well elder that is at a nursing facility? We were able too, maybe things changed or some things are different at belle glade.

SilenceDogood, I could not have stated it better. I was going to apply at Broward College but didn't because I thought PBCC had a better program. I spoke to a person in second semester and from what they told me it doesn't get any better. I think I will take online lecture next semester, so far not seeing the benefit of taking in class lecture. As far as the well elder, nobody has gone over that yet either. Then again, I am in long term care and not with my clinical group.

Mystical - For us, it specifically states the elder is not to be anyone living in a nursing home facility.

navygrl - The only word that's been uttered in respect to the Well Elder paper in my clinical group is that the first interview is due October 5.

Maybe the fact the program is smaller at Belle Glade makes organization better.

Navygirl is right tho, it seems as if it's their first time running it. I'm pretty disappointed, to be perfectly honest.

I do agree with you silence about the small class size = better organization. Just a word about well elder... unless they changed things... from what i can recall the instructions were pretty easy to follow, it actually was one of the easier papers to do... Again, I am sorry that you guys are going through this. I actually origianally wanted to go to LW, I guess it worked in benefit ending in BG. If I can help with anything let me know....

I feel rather discouraged as well. The well elder paper does look easy, but no one has spoken about it in my group either. I thought they would at least go over it, maybe it's just not that important?

And I'm curious about what the simulation thing is too.

We did not have to do a simulation in 1st semester. This semester we do. I will actually be at LW next for that, along with another student. From what I can gather it is a dummy that can be programed to have problems like sob, or crackles, MI etc.... so you are given a scenario and you have to treat this dummy like you would a live patient and do a dhat and a summary of what you did and what happened. This is my understanding of simulation at least for 2nd semester... hope this helps

Did anyone apply for Belle Glade Spring 2010?? This is my second time applying, I tried for LW last spring and didnt make it. Now I am applying for Belle Glade with 26.81.... So I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I am applying for Belle Glade Spring 2010. I got acepted at Belle last year but could not start because of my crazy schedule at my last job. Thank God I work from home most of the time now and have enough time to focus and study. I am sure you will get in cprincess701. the cut off last year I think was 18. something . I have 22.57 points, I have faith that I will get in this year. keep us posted when you get your acceptance email/ letter. ttyl

Hi, I'm also applying to Belle Glade 2010 spring with 25.10. This will be my fourth time applying to PBCC so I really hope I get in this time! Good luck to all applicants :)
