Paying for Pre-requisites - the Cost of Nursing Training

I'm considering the U-Mass accelerated BSN.

Inorder to be considered i will need to complete several science courses (with labs) and they tell me there is no financial aid to do so... It will cost @ $6000.

As a single mom I've been struggling financially for some time.

How are other people paying for these pre-requisites?

It's tough. I had to save up ahead of time, so I didn't go into debt. Then, I got such good grades, that I was awarded a full scholarship through our honors program. But, I'll have to come up with more money again when I bridge to my BSN. I had high hopes of getting my ADN, then getting a job and getting tuition reimbursement through the hospital. But, I may have to get my BSN before I get a job.

Single parents have it so rough. If it were me, I'd just apply for every scholarship you can find. You never know.

I'm paying out of pocket this summer and in the fall. Once the winter semester comes, my employer may pick up the cost. Hang in there!

Can't you take the pre reqs at a community college? That'd drastically cut costs. Also have you applied for FAFSA? You never know what you could get especially with dependents.

Definitely do fafsa. Have someone help you fill it out. Find your w-2 forms.

If they don't give you a grant, the stafford loan should be about $9,500. You don't pay that back until you graduate. It prime rate. 2% ?

My last one I paid back $50/month for 9 years.

I'm thinking the OP has a bachelors in another discipline (hence, the accelerated BSN) and as such is not eligible for any financial aid through FAFSA / government funding.

But definitely get your sciences through your community college. That will help a lot.

I have a previous bachelors degree and I was able to get a federal loan for nursing school.

I think the OP was referring to outright grant/ scholarship $$

I am in a similar situation. I have used up all of my pell grants and loans with my first degree that I am not eligible for anymore. I have no other option but to go to a community college to get my RN. I'm hoping once I am working as a nurse I will be able to afford an RN-BSN bridge program. Good luck! It is not easy, but hopefully you will be able to find a solution :)
