pay scale in ontario and quebec...

Published

hello, can anybody give me some insight on what the "pay scales" are in Ontario and Quebec? for egsample, what does a new grad and the most senior RN's make in Otario, same for Quebec. thx.

I can't tell you for ontario, but in quebec grads starts at 18 something an hour and after 18 years I think it's 26 something.

In Ontario, pay scale starts at $22/hr. Top is near $37/hr. These are approximate pay scales. In LTC it is lower.

The main union for RN's in Ontario is ONA and the pay scale is 22.44 to 33.75.It takes 7 or 8 years of full time work hours to get to the top rate. If you worked fulltime at one place for 3 years and 4 years at another you would be at step 7. The contract expired in March and recently went to arbritation so sometime in the future these rates should go up. If you aren't full time you get 13% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay starting at 6% of your wage.

My sis is an RN in Ontario and she makes $38

thx all for your time and the info. more questions :) .. 1> so they determine how many yrs an RN has worked full time... do they combine that with the type of experience to determine the pay level? 2> i know BSN's and graduate RN's have different pay scales in quebec, is it the same for ontario? why are (this may be a dumb question) the RN's in ontario getting payed more than in quebec?... maybe due to higher cost of living in ontario? *now this may prove to be an even more "dumber" question.. can an RN negotiate their pay scale in ontario and/or quebec? thx again.

I can only answer for my experience with ONA. As far as I know type of experience has nothing to do with the pay level."A nurse is a nurse."

I don't have a copy of the contract with me, but if there is extra money for BSN it isn't much more. I have not idea why the pay scale is less in Quebec. Ontario nurses got a big pay raise quite a few years ago now and maybe the nurses in Quebec didn't have the same gain. The negotiation is probably possible, but people aren't likely to tell anyone. It probably doesn't happen very often in a union setting because people would grieve it.

Thanks Betsy,

I am an agency nurse at the moment so I just have peripheral knowledge of the current situation. I was Barganing union President for ONA when I worked LTC, and so I was more current at the time.

I am not unionized at the moment (agency) so I do get to negotiate my salary and work out my own schedule. I get 50% of my benefits paid for if I work 24 hr/week.

posting it to everyone rather than one individual.

Whats this I hear about layoffs in ON ? And what are they thinking ? Isn't that extremely short sighted ?

Why is the pay scale different in QC and ON? Well it's really two differents systems, is it not? Health care in Canada is managed at a provincial level so the nurses in QC negotiate with their government and Ontario nurses negotiate with ours. Each province has a different pay scale. I think Quebec's is near the lowest pay nurses in the country.

i was talking w/ an RN in quebec over the holidays... i didn't realize the rn situation in montreal was so grim, at least from my perspective. basically it came down to more work for not much/less pay. doesn't give me much insentive to go back there... unless i work in stepdown or the units.. i guess we'll see how much i love montreal. :stone

Before I came to Montreal I had about 2 1/2 years of experience. HR asked me for a total of hours for year to make the equivalence of experience here. They recognized 2 years and 285 calendar days and I qualified for step 9, we get ICU premium and a bunch of differentials, but of course paying ~ 35% of salary on taxes brings my pay low, but is not bad. For sure the majority of the time we are understaff but we manage.
