pay scale for boston RN's?

hi y'all-- looking for recent approximate pay rates for RN's with just under 5 years experience. it is difficult to find pay rate info for boston hospitals. do hospitals in the city pay more or less-- any info would be greatly appreciated.:confused:

I have an idea of how much the pay rate is now.

Beth Israel is not a union hospital. They were sued a few years ago for illegal pay practices and I think they've gotten a little better since then:

How much experience do you have? Your base should be more than $26/hr- new grads make more than that up here.

The way hospitals do their differentials varies by the hospital. I believe Beth Israel's differentials are similar to the other adult hospitals in the area - Brigham and Women's and Mass General - and that it's a flat rate as opposed to a percentage.

Boston doesn't have a city tax but Massachusetts has a fairly high state tax.

Parking is expensive. If you plan to live in the city, take the T to work. Nearly all of the hospitals will subsidize T passes and allow you to pay the remainder with pre-tax dollars.

I am making significantly more working in home health than I did in the hospital but this isn't necessarily true across the board. In general hospitals will pay more, it's just my hospital in particular didn't pay well when compared to other Boston hospitals.

Hi I'm thinking about doing an Accelerated BSN. The MGH and Simmons Programs cost about 60K Tuition...plus there's living/trans/HI.. So I think I'd be @ 100K in debt. I'm wondering about nursing salaries in Boston and how quickly they increase? i.e.

Average Salary:

0 experience

1 yr experience

3 yr experience

5 yr experience

7 yr experience

9 yr experience

I'm assuming unioned hospitals are better than non-union?

I'm most interested in L&D !

Hi,

Trying to figure out if I can afford to do an accelerated program at the age of 57....Working as a nurse for at least 10 years... but starting a career near 60.

I'm told the Boston Market is tight. What hospitals in or around Boston are hiring new grads?

What is the salary progression? i.e.

0 years

5 years

10 years

I’m a new hire at one of the Harvard-affiliated hospitals in Boston with 2 years experience. Salary varies between hospitals ofc but for 2 years experience I was offered anywhere from $34-35/hour base for inpatient nursing. Every year you might be eligible for a raise of $1-2/hr I believe.

Oh and also MGH offered me ~$1-2 more per hour than union hospitals, but the benefits at the union hospitals are better in my opinion. MGH also has an orientation salary rate (~$4/hr lower than your base salary when you work independently off orientation) for however long your orientation is, while union hospitals pay you your base salary the entire time. Just fyi.

Just moved to Massachusetts from Texas. I can definitely say the pay here is absolutely awful in comparison, all things considered. With 1 year and 8 months experience, only 1 year of my experience is counted with our MNA union, so I won't be increased to step 3 when I hit 2 years of experience in June as it should. No justification given. My base pay at this level is a whopping $30.69. My base pay in Texas was $34.59 and houses cost literally half as much. I'll be working with a Steward affiliated hospital outside of Boston FYI.

Here's how the pay scale goes for 2020:

Step 1: 0-1 years of experience, $29.44

Step 2: 1-2 years, $30.69

Once you hit 2 years of experience, you're at step 3 unless you happen to start with 1 year and 10 months, 11 months, etc. Step 3 pays $31.98.

Wages start to compete with Texas at around 10-11 years of experience with a base of $42.79. Max step is 19 and the base pay is $62.87.

@Serhilda thanks for the breakdown! I am shocked by the pay for Boston RNs. I am originally from NYC and the starting rate is $38-44/hr depending on location and shift etc. I am looking at NP jobs in Boston and the starting hourly rate is $38-45! That's so low compared to the standard of living.

Are you at least enjoying the quality of life there? Coming from NYC, there is a lot of diversity and wondering if Boston will be as welcoming/ accepting of POC esp after coronavirus.

I'm glad you mentioned how accepting they are because that's been my biggest gripe. I'm about 40 minutes away from downtown but these people have been some of the most subtly prejudice people I've ever met. They're very ethnocentric and have no desire to increase their cultural competence. There's this attitude that everyone else in the world is looking up to Boston admiring their hospitals, nurses, colleges, houses, and general way of living. If they saw me as inferior for being from the south, I can't even imagine how it'd be if I were from another country, especially Asia right now.

Aside from that, the quality of life is decent, especially with how they're handling the coronavirus. The food was certainly a downgrade and I've had to sneak hot sauce into every Tex Mex restaurant LOL.
