hello, i was reading post from here and found something interesting. i live here in san diego, california and about to take nclex this coming march. if i will be lucky, next thing is, i need to find a hospital to adopt me lol... but of course everything will depend on how much are they gonna pay me. san diego is a very expensive place to live as well. i have known some nurses here who are being paid 27/hr as starting salary. i wondered why san francisco nurses are being paid 35/hr up to $70/hr!. i would like to ask how much is the starting salary for nurses all over california (special unit and regular ward). i can choose any city in california but i cannot go out of ca because of the child custody of my husband with my step son. pls help me find and compare salary scales amongst california cities. i am an ex-uk (london) nurse and i have very little idea about california pay scale differences and taxes. any info. is valuable. thanks so much.

You've got to be kidding. Forgive me, but why don't you do your own footwork. PRE- AND Post taxes...LOL
sigh....dont get me wrong lol....u dont get me i guess.... maybe i need to explain it more lol.... i meant tax deductions per city/state per salary. does it differ with every city/state and how much? pay scale for newly qualified nurses in CA. its a question and if u dont know the answer it is ok but i am sure u know how much they pay u and how many % of tax they deduct from ur salary right? u may SHARE IT or not its your own choice. thanks for the reply anyways...

I am not a nurse, so I can't tell you about pay rates. But I just moved out of East Bay to SoCal 2 weeks ago. NorCal is just a really really really expensive place to live in. At least, sales tax up there is 8.75%. Housing is expensive. You earn more there because you are gonna spend even more up there.
The % of tax they take from you is up to the individual. It will depend on how many dependents you claim. Why I am LOL is that everyones' check is different depending on a lot of factors. What I make and my tax situation won't help YOU figure any thing out. Each hospital's pay is different even in the same city, their benefits are different. Federal taxes are set up by electing the number of dependents. The State or local tax is a different story. :Melody:

Salaries are higher where expenses are higher. Apt rents in the Bay Area are some of the most expensive in the state. New grads in the Bay Area do not start at $70 per hour.

Suzanne is right. New grads at my hospital start at $41.49, not counting shift differential. Housing is expensive, but you can find affordable housing if you know where to look (and no, I'm not referring to Oakland). I live in Concord and ride BART to work. My apartment costs me approximately $900 a month. $70/hr is the going rate for per-diem nurses with experience.
thanks for the info guys...i really appreciate it. i am still in a learning process about almost everything here in US. every litte thing helps... thanks a lot.

Other than advanced practice RNs, I don't know who makes $70.00/hr.

A friend of mine is starting off at $35/hour at Stanford in Ca and she just completed a BSN. She is expecting a raise in 6 months.
*Correction--it was 38/hour, and this is in an ICU
