pay rates in California (pre-and post tax)

Published

hello, i was reading post from here and found something interesting. i live here in san diego, california and about to take nclex this coming march. if i will be lucky, next thing is, i need to find a hospital to adopt me lol... but of course everything will depend on how much are they gonna pay me. san diego is a very expensive place to live as well. i have known some nurses here who are being paid 27/hr as starting salary. i wondered why san francisco nurses are being paid 35/hr up to $70/hr!. i would like to ask how much is the starting salary for nurses all over california (special unit and regular ward). i can choose any city in california but i cannot go out of ca because of the child custody of my husband with my step son. pls help me find and compare salary scales amongst california cities. i am an ex-uk (london) nurse and i have very little idea about california pay scale differences and taxes. any info. is valuable. thanks so much.

I have been reading some of the threads here about salary scales and often they say that SF is one of the highest pay rates. but the downside is, it is one of the most expensive area to live in... some says it ranges from $35-$45-$70 depending on experience and stuff...

Im from AZ, Im curious of moving to Calif to work as OR nurse. We receive here between $25-30/hr. Which place in Calif is giving higher pay rate? Which hospital is also called a magnet hospital? Any reply is much appreciated.

my friend works as a travel nurse in AZ and she said shes been paid $42/hr + OT plus $10,000 sign on bonus for 2 years. its been her 2 years and 5 months in the USA and she was able to buy a 3 br house by herself... not bad huh?

Please check your PM's - information there for you regarding possible jobs. Good luck!

does anyone know what the new grad rate at scripps hospitals are in san diego. I just found out that childrens is offering new grads 31.77/hr, but they are only taking about 50 new grads this year so its going to be really hard to even get an interview. I know for sure sharp starts at 27.50, but dont know for UCSD medical or SCRIPPS Hospital.

I phoned the human resources department in scripps hospital SD 3 weeks ago and inquired about the new grad salary rate. Regular ward is $29/hr a little more for special areas maybe a $ more.

Okay so this just in. I called scripps on monday, the starting rate for new grads just went up. 30.85!!! There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Everyone is soooo secretive about salaries in our Hospital.

I am in Southern CA and I DO know that new grads (RNs!!) in our Hospital were getting about $22 an hour. This was about three years ago. I am assuming they must be getting more per hour now, but who knows?

HORRIBLE wages considering we have to pay for monthly parking and that the average rent in this county is about $1,400 a month.

In the hospital where I am currently working, the start rate is 28.50 for new grads Plus a $ raise after 90 days of hire and a 3% raise every 6 month or a year, I am not really sure. We are unionized as well. The parking is free. I recently passed nclex but have been working abroad as an RN. They credited all my nursing experience even if this job is my first ever nursing job in the states. Yes, the average rent here is 1200-1600 for 2 br 2 bath apartments. I received my first salary 2 weeks ago (for 36 hrs of working) and my total tax deduction is $260 for a week's work! kinda steep , I guess...

Is that for an MSN?

What I was told was:

29.09/hr ADN

30.55/hr BSN

Regardless... it's good pay, and I'm satisfied with it. =)

Hi! I am just about to move to San Diego for a year while my husband trains at the Naval Medical Center, and though I previously have been travel nursing, I am reading about the hourly wages and am wondering if these hourly rates people are quoting are not including the time-and-a-half you guys get in California after eight hours? Just trying to figure out whether it may actually make a few more dollars to just go staff instead of travelling again. I'm an ICU nurse with about three years of experience- if the hourly rates people are quoting are indeed around $30/hr plus time-and-a-half after eight hours, this rate blows even some of the better agencies including a monthly housing stipend out of the water!

night shift differential is $4-5 an hour
