I work for a Freestanding ER and they require I have PALS. I have ENPC but they don't accept it. My question, don't they have to pay for hours spent getting recertification? Department of Labor says they do. I also talked to our Regional Directer and I was told she felt as if she didn't need to pay the hours. I wanted to tell her that it is not her choice. What do you all say? Yes they paid the course but they made me take it to stay employed.

I am not sure on the exact rules you will probably want to reference your state labor laws because it could be different in every state. It is likely not "illegal" to not pay for your time. Most hospitals do pay for the class and your time because it really is the right thing to do. We pay for all required training.

My understanding of the law (which is quite possibly different in each state) is anything that is REQUIRED by the hospital must be paid by the hospital, including the hours to take the class.
I should have clarified that I live in Texas.

I do not know the labor laws in Texas, but Texas is an At-Will employment state. In other word, if you insist on being a "problem" child, your employer may reconsider your employment. Therefore, if I were you, unless you are working in a union backed work environment (or unless you find that your co-workers have had your employer pay for the course), pay for the class yourself! You will likely be able to write it off on your taxes, just talk to a CPA in your area.

My hospital pays for the hours I spend in mandatory classroom training. But they don't pay me for obtaining CEs for a mandatory specialty certification. But this is also outlined in our HR policies. Have you looked there?
