Patients mom wants me to get in bed with her

Thoughts on this? I feel like this is an EXTREMELY odd request and I've gotten several. Not because I think it's INAPPROPRIATE per se, but it's just seems off. Thoughts?

How would you explain this to the judge if you went to court? And what if you are accused of an inappropriate act? Hidden cameras and the family gets mad and sets you up? Plus it can't be sanitary. Talk to your supervisor, but run from the case if it's not resolved.

Weighted blankets are an AMAZING thing. You (and by you I meant anyone in general) can make them yourself if insurance won't cover them or you can't afford them. It might help her sleep through the night.[/quote']

. So mom lays with her, using her body to literally restrain her. The weight from someone laying on her is calming to this girl and she'll fall asleep pretty quickly.

Have you tried a weighted blanket or vest? There is a woman in the town where I live who used to make the weighted blankets, but now they might be commercially available. The weighted vests are for sure.

She's got all that. Once she's asleep, we put them on so she remains asleep. This girl Cannot. Stop. Moving. I know how odd it seems but I cannot stress this enough. If you just pile on the weighted blanket and pillow (she's got a pillow pet with weights attached to the legs) and leave her alone she'll toss them off the bed. And pick them up. And throw them off. And pick them up. I don't put my head down on the pillow with her or anything. I'm literally holding her down, firmly but gently. She can breathe just fine and does not resist, and can finally relax. This is part of her care. The reason I come forward with this unusual case is because somebody mentioned that they could not imagine a situation where that would be necessary. Well, here it is! Besides, there IS a camera in the room. I don't know if the parents have one too, because I usually am using it in the next room to observe her when she is sleeping, but I have been w this girl for 3 years off and on, and her hyperkinesis is well-documented. Odd? Yes, 99.9% of the time. In this case? No, it's a necessity.

I would offer to sit next to the patient and hold his hand while he was in bed, but that's it. I would have to say I am not comfortable with laying next to the pt. If you are not comfortable, that's that.
