Passed NCLEX,no SSN yet

hi...i would like to address my question to anyone who could enlighten me on this matter...i recently passed my NCLEX-RN under the state of NY, i am aware that i could only obtain my license if i have my SSN already, which i do not have right now...our I140 has been approved couple of months back but due to retrogression, we cannot proceed to the next step yet...my friend who passed her NCLEX under California informed me that she also received a letter from her BON stating that she is given like 2-3years to obtain an SSN if she fails to do so, her NCLEX will be forfeited/revoked or something like that. I would just like to ask if this situation is the same for other states particularly for NY. When i received my official NCLEX result, there was no other letter or notice stating as to until when i am given the time to obtain SSN for my license.Hope you guys could help me with this...i appreciate your time.

Thanks much...praying for the best for us all!:balloons:

Hi,

thanks a lot, great help. I used to have an agency in New York with I-140 approved 2004 but my documents was pulled out by INS which my agency can't explain me the reason why it happend. I finally withdraw my application. So , no contact from my old agency from 2005 till now. Then Aug 2006, i applied again with other agency. They started filing my I-140 but no approval yet due to retrogression. This April I applied my tourist visa to attend our rotary convention, since I am a community director of our club maybe that's the reason why they approved me, but they only gave me up to July 9. Is it possible for me to go to New York and apply SSN?

Thanks.

No you can not apply for a SSN until you have your greencard. To get SSN you have to prove that you are there legally with a valid visa and tourist visa does not qualify. Plenty of info about SSN and when to apply on this forum

You cannot apply for a SSN# with a tourist visa, you must have a document that will permit you to work. And you do not have that. And it looks like they also gave you only a three month visa. And please make sure that you leave the US by the time that is stamped in your visa.

This is middle of April, it is not going to be over in June, no way that it can be. From when ever the announcement is made that there are visas going to be available, it is 90 days until they are.

Foreign nurses do not get a SSN# until they have gone thru the immigration process and have actually arrived in the US ready to work.

If there were visas available, and you were thinking of staying, it is minimum of five months before you could start work, and most do not have the funds to do that. You need to be in the US for three months before the petitions could even be submitted, so you would be overstaying your visa aleady.

You are going thru the wrong process. CA will not issue you a license until you are in the US and ready to begin work. You need to apply for Licensure by Examination for NY, you do not have a license number to endorse. Adn then have CA forward the passing of the NCLEX-RN exam to NY.

But next question is where do you plan to work? If you did not train in NY as an RN, you are not going to find one hospital that is going to petition you, you only choice is the nursing home. And as a new nurse coming to the US, worst possible thing to do.

[hi all as we know the retro is over but things r more disturbing now, because date of texas service center has gone back, can anyone tell me what is hc1 visas.

but retrogression is not over, please see previous threads about it, it is just a band aid. H1c visas are for hospitals which can not get staff and usually in areas very bad and even undesirable/bad, not many hospitals for them

Don't think there are any states which will allow renewal with no SSN

Hi Silverdragon! :)

Would just like to ask, if one cannot renew their license without a SSN, what do we do? Apply to another state till Retrogression is over and we get the SSN?

Thanks! :wink2:

I mean do we apply to another state for initial licensure again if we dont have the SSN at time we need to renew license already?

This thread is nearly 12 months old. We have seen some renew their license without SSN but all depends on the BON. This is something you need to ask the BON. I believe they have made these changes due to recognising retrogression and the timeframe it is taking to get nurses over
