Passed NCLEX,no SSN yet

Published

hi...i would like to address my question to anyone who could enlighten me on this matter...i recently passed my NCLEX-RN under the state of NY, i am aware that i could only obtain my license if i have my SSN already, which i do not have right now...our I140 has been approved couple of months back but due to retrogression, we cannot proceed to the next step yet...my friend who passed her NCLEX under California informed me that she also received a letter from her BON stating that she is given like 2-3years to obtain an SSN if she fails to do so, her NCLEX will be forfeited/revoked or something like that. I would just like to ask if this situation is the same for other states particularly for NY. When i received my official NCLEX result, there was no other letter or notice stating as to until when i am given the time to obtain SSN for my license.Hope you guys could help me with this...i appreciate your time.

Thanks much...praying for the best for us all!:balloons:

your NCLEX is not forfit you just need to refile, they are very understanding on forieng nurses and the delay. Would suggest doing a search especially in the International forum as this has been answered numerous times.

NY is one of the few that will issue you a license without a SSN#. You have not received a letter like that from NY as they will be issuing you a license. If your I-140 was approved several months ago, and you just passed the NCLEX exam, that means that you have taken the CGFNS exam.

You just need to wait and you will be receiving a license in the mail. Did you check to see if your name is on their website? You will see it there.

when you passed nclexrn, it is for good. there is no expiration date. what your friend told you means, her license will expire...but not the nclexrn..all she have to do is to renew her california license. she cannot get her hardlicense since she does not have a social security number..which is given only to those who enters the united state legally. you won't get a ssn until you get here in the u.s. you need to apply for that in your local state federal center. you may want to check with ny board of nursing if how long is your ny rn license is good for, otherwise, you need to renew it. passing the nclexrn doesn't guarantee that you can work here in the u.s. you need to have a proper paperworks also..goodluck to you.

Almost every single state in the US requires a SSN# to renew a license, even for the ones that will issue a license without a SSN#. And you need to meet the requirements of the state as far as renewal, same as if you were in the US.

NY has been one that will issue a license without a SSN#, but they do require the SSN# to renew.

And you must have a SSN# to work in all fifty states, the license alone does not give anyone permission to work legally in the US.

I currently working in united kingdom and i'm on resident visa, but i still want to go to the US.

I am in the same situation as well, I passed the NCLEX RN (california BON) a year ago, i got visa screen certificate and just waiting for the I140 to be approved.

I just worried not to get the SSN on time, because of the retrogression. Is there anyway i can get the SSN? like for example going to america just to get one?

Sorry but you need to have a US legal status for you to be issued a SSN. Unfortunately, having passed the NCLEX does not qualify you to be issued a SSN.:o

Unfortunately, no. You must have a visa that will permit you to to work in the US to be able to get a SSN#. Many foreign nurses are in the same predicament as you. Or have a document that permits you to work. Tourist visa will not get you a SSN#.

I'm in the same position as you are. I passed the nclex rn last january and still have no SSN#. I think we have to wait until the retrogression to be over until we can get one....

in order for you to apply for ssn, you have to be a legal resident in the u.s., that means you need to have proper legal paperworks. ssn can be only obtain when you are in u.s. soil. you have to apply for it in the federal gov. centers in the state where you are going to live and work.
