Passed my CCRN exam!

Published

Took it this afternoon and passed. :yeah: 110/125 (88%). My worst section was multi-system (60%) but I got 100% on endocrine/hem/neuro/gastro, 96% on cardio and 91% on pulmonary. I was most worried about cardio and pulmonary as I felt I knew them well but it's a lot of material.

Advice for the newbies out there looking to take it for the first-time; study your butt off! I read the Pass CCRN book by Dennison front to back once and then thumbed through pulmonary/cardio a second time. I listened to the Laura Gasparis DVD's, another set of lectures from Cammy-House Fancher, as well as an NTI CCRN review from I believe 2008.

Excessive, sure, but I can now read a 12 lead like it's child's play. I could probably teach a 2-day conference on DKA and HHNK. I feel I know liver failure like I've had it before. :lol2:

It's great to have passed, but it's really nice to know a bunch of stuff I had no idea about before. Studying for this exam will make you a better nurse. It's tough but doable! :)

How different is the CCRN from the CEN and the PCCN? Does anyone know how different the CCNS is from the CCRN?

Specializes in ICU/PACU.

Congrats!! My goal is to get my CCRN in 2012. I own the Laura Gasparis DVDs, but that's it. How long did you give yourself to study? I was thinking 2 months, a little everyday.

AT least 90 days

I can't really say how different they are, but I've been told you can probably do the CEN if you've done CCRN. A lot of the material carries over, and as long as you study well, you'll probably be able to pass it.

PCCN is something I'd never think of trying without peds experience. A lot of my answers for the CCRN I was able to figure out simply based on experience. I've got zero experience with peds outside of my short peds clinical in nursing school. As for taking CCRN if you do peds, I'd say the same. My coworker's fiance does peds and he has started trying to study for the CCRN and he has told her it's like reading French.

CCNS I've never looked into, but the AACN site says it has a 92% first-time pass rate, while CCRN has a 72%. PCCN is even worse at 62%.

Good luck! The PASS CCRN book is massive and takes at least a few months to read if you're only doing a few pages a day. I read it slowly in my downtime last year then flipped through the cardio/pulmonary stuff starting about 2 months before I took the exam. Then I did all the audio stuff nearly daily up until the exam. I've got Bluetooth in my car so I just streamed the audio while driving to/from work, and occasionally while on break. I maybe did 10 hours of studying at home, everything else was on breaks or in the car.

2 months of studying sounds perfect. Any more than that and you'll start forgetting everything. I did 2 months of studying for GRE and that was about perfect as well.

I highly recommend listening to the audio driving around. You've gotta be in the car anyways, might as well knock out some studying.

Also, icufaqs.org is a great reference site while studying. There's a 20+ page article on balloon bumps that was really quite helpful. The 12-lead article is great as well.

PCCN is for Progressive Care nurses.

The Pediatric CCRN is still CCRN just a peds or neonatal focused exam.

LOL! Can't believe I've never noticed that until now, but then again I've never looked into the PCCN or peds CCRN. :imdbb:
