2 part time jobs!!! I need advice!

Published

Hi. I am a new grad RN and I recently accepted two part time positions-- both 8 hour shifts. One at a University owned correctional setting and the other at a LTC facility. I was called for an interview for a sub acute rehab unit at a major hospital, also 8 hours. Is it possible to do 1 full time and 1 part time job, both being 8 hours shift? Thanks in advance

I am confused. You mentioned two part time jobs and a full time job. Wouldn't that be three jobs???

I wouldn't do it. That is a quick way to getting burned out.

Why? Especially when you are a new grad would you want to work all those hours and get burnt out right away. I would go with a per-diem situation rather than a part time.

I would either work a PT and a per diem position or a straight FT job (and add a per diem later).

Don't burn out!! With that said, you will be fine. It will be hard but definitely doable as long as you can differentiate primary from part time. KEY: survive on your full time salary only, use part time cash for fun and saving!

If you are a young new-grad nurse, please be especially careful with your personal boundaries at a juvenile detention center. I used to teach middle school full time (ages 11-14, usually) and I can tell you that those kids are old enough to have raging hormones, but not mature enough to know how to handle them appropriately. Kids in juvenile detention will probably also be dealing with mental health issues and perhaps bad home situations, etc. Just watch yourself!! Sorry this is a little bit off topic but felt like I had to say it... Good luck! My father was a correctional officer and I have considered doing corrections nursing as I have compassion for the unloved and marginalized in our society. No prisons or detention centers in my town, however.

Actually the OP has accepted 2 PT positions and will be interviewing for a FT position. It still seems like a lot but it would depend on the actual work hours for the 2 PT jobs (for e.g.) and proximity to each other.

Hi I couldn't find a full time position so I took two part time positions to have 40 hours a week.. Each job is 20 hours/week. If I get picked for a full time position after I interview, I've decided to decline the part time job offers and just stick to the full time. Thanks everyone

Not unless you plan to work 50-60 hours a week and thats a lot. I have 2 part time jobs and I do not work more then 36 hours between the two, however I could because they always need someone for extra hours. Its best to get 2 part times, but its hard to commit to a full time and a part time.
