Parkland Residency Summer 2020

Updated:   Published

Hello everyone!

I created this thread for those who are interested or applying to the residency program at Parkland for the summer 2020. I'm hoping this thread is helpful for those wanting to talk and ask questions. Good luck to everyone!

Has anyone already filled out all of the health information surveys but hasn't heard back about when to do their occupational health appointment? I am sure everything is slowed down due to the current situation, but I just wanted to make sure I am staying on track with pre-employment tasks!

I was wondering the same thing! But I think they might just be trying to catch up, considering everything that's going on.

Thank you for responding! What unit will you be on?

I haven't received my email regarding the health info survey, but the recruiter told me last week that I wouldn't need to schedule my health appointment until closer to start date, sometime in late May or June. I start in July. I would say if you start in May you will probably need to schedule it soon, but if you start in July, you have some time!

You are right, I start in May and got my appointment 2 weeks ago.

Where have you heard this? None of my friends with residencies at MC, Baylor, Methodist, or Parkland have heard anything about suspensions of residencies. Considering the peak is expected around end of April/early May I’m not sure why they’d suspend residencies that start mid to late July.

I work in the industry ?

They are suspending them due to low census, lack of/conservation of PPE and infection risk from the difficulties in social distancing when precepting a new grad. Classes are having to be cancelled, skill fairs cannot take place and the one on one guidance needed to teach things simply can't be done at a distance of six feet. COVID-19 has made hosting residencies a logistical nightmare.

It bears noting that the "peak" is not the same as the "end". Flattening the curve means a peak that lasts longer, resolves slower and is very gradual in coming down. Fully expect we will be dealing with this situation through most, if not all, of the Summer.

Does anyone have any contact information for the recruiters?

It is against the TOS to post this information.

I reached out when this stuff started hitting the fan asking if I still had a job (I’ve been accepted into the MICU program) and I got an email back saying I still have a job and it will still start in July.

Also, I reached out to try and schedule my appointment at the health center and have not received a reply. We have plenty of time before all this starts in July.

OK good, I hope that means that Parkland is still continuing on with their residencies. I understand why it will be complicated though..
